YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The Embry-Riddle men's lacrosse team battled back from being down 9-3 to tie the game at 10-10, but ultimately couldn't pull out the victory as Young Harris claimed a 13-12 win. The Mountain Lions moved to 1-2 with the win, while the Eagles fell to 1-3.
Mitchell Cody led all players with four points on two goals and two assists, while
Coleman Jacobs led with three goals and 16 shots.
Mark Urso was nearly unbeatable in faceoffs, winning 24 of 27, while also leading all players with 19 ground balls. Urso also scored a goal, one of nine Eagles to tally a goal in the game.
Charlie Wilson played all 60 minutes in goal, making 11 saves on the 24 shots that he faced.
Urso got the Blue and Gold off to a good start as he took the opening faceoff and went straight down the field to score, giving ERAU a 1-0 lead after just 14 seconds. Young Harris countered with a quick goal of their own, tying the game only 21 seconds later. The Mountain Lions went on to add two more goals in the quarter to take a 3-1 lead after the first.
YHC netted the first four goals of the second quarter to build its lead to 7-1 with 8:05 to play in the half.
Lars Hoeg and Jacobs got the next two goals to make it a 7-3 game, but Young Harris scored the next two to retake a six-goal lead at 9-3. Cody scored his first goal of the game with 2:23 to play in the quarter, which was followed by two more Eagle goals, including a
Jacob Schripsema tally that came with just five seconds to play in the half, trimming the deficit to 9-6.
The Eagles kept the momentum in the third quarter, as
Jared Kane opened the scoring just under five minutes into the period and Cody followed up with a goal at the 8:31 mark to make it 9-8. The Mountain Lions scored with 3:20 left but Jacobs quickly answered less than a minute later and
Michael Forte closed out the quarter with a goal in the final seconds to tie the game at 10-10.
Young Harris regained the lead with a goal less than two minutes into the fourth, and by the time the clock went under four minutes to play, the Mountain Lions had increased their lead to 13-10. Jacobs got his third goal of the game with 3:29 to play to keep the Eagles in it, and a
Marcus Needham man-up goal 45 seconds later made it a one-goal game at 13-12. Over the game's final 2:44, YHC was able to prevent the Eagle offense from getting comfortably set up and it wasn't until the final seconds that ERAU was able to get a shot away, with Jacobs' attempt being saved just before the final whistle blew.
The Blue and Gold will play the fifth and final game of this season-opening road trip on Sunday, Feb. 23 at Coker. That game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
