Women’s Tennis Opens 2020 Campaign With Shutout of Ave Maria

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team opened its 2020 season with a victory on Tuesday as the Eagles blanked Ave Maria 7-0 at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
 
The Eagles took an early lead by winning all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. Playing on court three, Alexis Marshall teamed up with Mafalda Soares for a 6-3 win against Katie Fuller and Aethielle Kelkboom. Sabrina Ehrenfort and Julia Mautner followed with a 6-2 defeat of Amarlia Benn and Grabrielle Benn on court two, and Georgina Wood and Roberta Krvajica completed the doubles sweep by besting Lara Teodoro and Julia Condiotto 6-4 on court one.
 
The first two singles matches off the court saw the Eagles surrender just three games as Soares notched a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Kelly Sousa on court four, and Marshall topped Kelkboom 6-1, 6-1 on court three. The match at the top spot went to three sets, and after falling behind 6-3 in the first set, Wood rallied to best Teodoro 6-0, 6-1 to clinch the Eagle victory.
 
After Mautner downed Amarlia Benn 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 5 position, Ehrenfort pulled out a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 win over Gabrielle Benn on court two, and Maria Secatore assured the Eagles of the shutout by besting Condiotto 6-2, 6-4 on court six.
 
The Eagles will be back in action on at 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 12 when they host Florida National University at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
