DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle baseball team couldn't complete the weekend sweep of Auburn Montgomery on Sunday afternoon, dropping the finale 9-6 at Sliwa Stadium. AUM (1-6) got its first win of 2020 thanks to a 13-hit, six-walk effort from the offense as four of the six walks issued by the ERAU (4-2) pitching staff came around to score for the Warhawks. The Eagles collected a dozen hits, including three from
Mike Lawson, who also drove in two runs, but it wasn't enough as AUM snapped a four-game skid against the Blue and Gold.
Kelsey Ward got the start for Embry-Riddle, working two scoreless frames before the third inning when the visitors struck for four runs thanks to three hits, two walks, and an Eagle defensive error on a bunt, the third on the weekend for ERAU.
Embry-Riddle had a tough time against AUM's starter Micah Henderson, but broke through in the fourth when
Andrew Martinez singled to start the inning and
Robert Post followed with a double to put two runners in scoring position. A wild pitch brought in the first Eagle run of the day before
John Devine singled up the middle to trim the deficit to 4-2.
AUM got a run back in the fifth on a double from Matthew Zielonko that scored Dalton Cobb, and then the Warhawks nearly put the game out of reach with another four-run frame, this time in the sixth. Three walks issued in the frame all scored, two of them on an unfortunate play in the outfield as a ball was lost in the sun, and the visitors led 9-2.
Embry-Riddle immediately answered with a three-run sixth, as
Cody Forster and Lawson both doubled to left, collecting one and two RBIs, respectively as ERAUÂ got back into the game, cutting the lead to 9-5.
Daniel Rutherford held AUM scoreless in the seventh and eighth and
Joe Balsam did the same in the ninth, but ERAUÂ couldn't get anything going offensively until its last at-bats.
Lawson started the ninth with a single, moving to third on a Warhawk error on a Martinez ground ball, putting runners on the corners with one out. Post lined out to center for a sac fly, pushing Forster home, but
Eric Feliz struck out swinging to end the inning and game.
Ward (0-1) took the loss in 4.2 innings, with Lawson leading the way offensively with three hits and two RBIs.
Luis Olivier, Martinez and Devine each had a pair of hits for ERAU.
The Eagles head to Savannah to take on Savannah State next weekend, starting with a Feb. 14 game at 4 p.m. and a doubleheader on Feb. 15 starting at 1 p.m.
