DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's lacrosse team improved to 5-2 on the season with a 16-13 win over visiting Kutztown (2-3) on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles fended off multiple comeback attempts from the Golden Bears to capture their fourth win in the last five contests.
Mya Watson tied the program record with seven goals in the game and also picked up an assist, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers.
McKenzie Jackson tallied four goals, an assist, and four draw controls, while
Elizabeth Ninesling notched two goals, three ground balls, and a game-high seven draw controls.
Skylar Mossop stopped three of the eight shots she faced in the first half and
Mary Catherine Kreider (3-2) earned the win with four saves on 12 shots in the second half.
Watson opened the scoring 2:29 into the contest, but the Golden Bears tied it at one just over three minutes later. Watson made it 2-1 Eagles at the 22:34 mark and
Zariah Durham increased the lead to 3-1 just 67 seconds later. Jackson put home back-to-back goals 13 seconds apart to build the lead to 5-1 with 19:12 remaining in the first half. Kutztown stopped the run of Eagle goals a couple minutes later, but a Ninesling goal reestablished the four-goal lead (6-2) at the 14:20 mark. KU rallied with three consecutive goals over the next 10 minutes to cut it to a 6-5 game, but
Ellie Dailey ended that run with 2:03 to play in the half and Watson netted her third of the half with 58 seconds on the clock, giving the Blue and Gold an 8-5 halftime lead.
Kutztown scored twice in the first two minutes of the second half to make it an 8-7 game, and after Ninesling's second goal made it 9-7, the Golden Bears scored two more in a row to tie the game at 9-9 with 22:58 to play. Almost two minutes later, Watson scored her fourth goal of the game, which sparked a 4-0 run for the Eagles, including two Jackson goals and another Watson goal at the 16:12 mark that increased the lead to 13-9. The Golden Bears responded with three goals in three minutes, trimming the deficit to a single goal at 13-12. With 11:15 left, Kutztown was called for its fourth yellow card of the game, resulting in a two-minute man-up situation for the Eagles, and Watson took advantage, scoring her sixth goal just as the advantage came to an end. Less than 90 seconds later the Golden Bears were assessed another yellow card, and on the ensuing two-minute man-up situation ERAU scored two more goals to pull ahead, 16-12. The Golden Bears scored the only goal of the last seven minutes of the contest, but the Eagles played solid defense to prevent any further damage and secure the 16-13 win.
The Eagles will return to the ERAU Lacrosse Field on Saturday, March 14, to host Frostburg State at 4 p.m.
