SANFORD, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team suffered a heartbreaking loss to Augustana (12-0) on Wednesday, falling to the Vikings 4-3 in a neutral site match at Sylvan Lake Park. The outcome of Wednesday's three-hour, 17-minute contest came down to the last singles match off the court and in the end, it was the Vikings' Aleksandra Kristanova who was able to get the better of a three-setter against
Roberta Krvajica to hand the Eagles (8-2) their second loss of the season.
Doubles play lasted close to an hour and saw the Vikings take two of three contests to win the doubles point. The Vikings got their first win on court one where Laura Arce Vieyra and Grace Goble topped
Itxaso Blanco and
Alexis Marshall 6-3. The doubles clincher came on court three where Taylor Jackson and Anca Rusu bested
Julia Mautner and
Sabrina Ehrenfort 6-2.
The Blue and Gold avoided the doubles sweep when Krvajica and
Georgina Wood downed Kristanova and Emily Granson 6-3.
Singles play saw ERAU win the first three singles points to go up 3-1. Wood was first off the court after her 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Goble on court two. She was followed by Marshall who bested Emily Granson 6-2, 6-2 on court five and Ehrenfort scored the Eagles' third point with her 6-2, 6-3 win over Jackson at the fourth spot.
At No. 6 singles,
Mafalda Soares and Rusu were engaged in a dog fight in the first set. The ERAU sophomore battled Rusu to a 6-6 tie, but Rusu was able to come out on top in the tie breaker 7-6 (10-8) and she rode the momentum of that set to a 6-1 win in the second set to register the Vikings' second point of the day.
Playing at the top spot, Blanco battled back from a 6-3 loss in the first set to top Arce Vieyra 6-4 in the second and force a super tiebreaker. Blanco led the tiebreaker early on 4-2, but Arce Vierya was able to grab the win with a 10-7 decision to tie the team score at 3-3.
With the match tied, all eyes turned to the contest at No. 3 singles between Krvajica and Kristanova. Krvajica held a 4-1 lead in the first set, but Kristanova fought back to take the set 6-4. Kristanova seemed on track to win the match easily as she opened up a 5-2 lead on Krvajica in the second. Krvajica showed that she still had a lot of fight left as she stormed back to win the next five games and ultimately force a tiebreaker. The ERAU junior established a 6-0 lead in the tiebreaker before winning it 7-4 to force a decisive third frame.
A back-and-forth battle in the super tiebreaker saw both players tied at 7-7. The final three points belonged to Kristanova, however, and she clinched the match for the Vikings with a 10-7 win.
The Eagles will return to action on March 19 to host New Jersey Institute of Technology at the Crotty Tennis Complex at 3:30 p.m.
