DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle men's lacrosse team put on a dominant performance on Thursday night at the ERAU Lacrosse Field, taking down Walsh (1-2) by a score of 16-6. The 10-goal margin of victory was the largest ever for a home game and second-largest ever for any win in program history, behind only the 23-9 victory at Barton on March 12, 2019.
The Eagles (2-5) were led by
Coleman Jacobs, who set a new program single-game record with six goals on 12 shots, while
Mitchell Cody tallied six points with two goals and four assists.
Jacob Schripsema registered two goals and an assist and
Gage Poindexter chipped in with two goals.
Mark Urso was stellar in the circle, winning 16 of 23 faceoffs and collecting a game-high 12 ground balls, while
Charlie Wilson (2-5) made eight saves on 14 shots to earn the win in goal.
ERAU got things going early with Jacobs netting a pair of goals in the first 2:31 of the game. After Walsh got on the board,
Joe Anderson scored to make it 3-1 at the 10:04 mark of the first. The Cavaliers once again got within a goal but Poindexter and Jacobs tallied back-to-back goals to increase the lead to 5-2 with 3:23 left in the quarter. Walsh tacked on the final score of the period with 47 seconds left to make it a 5-3 game after one.
Urso made sure the Blue and Gold grabbed back the momentum early in the second as he scored a goal just 19 seconds into the period. The Cavs answered with a goal about five minutes later, and from that point both offenses went quiet, leading to a 6-4 halftime score.
Embry-Riddle's offense did not stay quiet in the second half, as ERAU outscored the Cavaliers 4-1 in the third quarter, including goals from Cody, Poindexter, Scripsema, and Jacobs, building the advantage to 10-5 heading to the final quarter.
The Eagles left no doubt in the fourth, rattling off six consecutive goals before Walsh got its final goal in the last minute of the game.
Michael Forte scored with 11:15 to play and Schripsema and Cody followed with goals over the next two minutes. Jacobs got his fifth and sixth goals of the game at the 7:14 and 3:41 marks, lifting the lead to 15-5, and
Jared Kane found the back of the net with 1:39 to play before the late Cavs goal accounted for the 16-6 final score.
The Eagles will return to action on March 14 when they travel to Melbourne to take on Florida Tech to open up Sunshine State Conference play.
