Volleyball Downs Lynn for 20th Win

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Led by 20 kills from Cameron Gilleland, the Embry-Riddle volleyball team took down Lynn 3-1 (25-20, 19-25, 32-30, 26-24) on Saturday to improve to 20-4 on the season and 10-3 in SSC play. The Fighting Knights drop to 14-10 overall, 9-5 in league matches.

Gilleland added 13 digs and three service aces, while Sam Lanning contributed 10 kills and six blocks (two solo). Melanie Canfield had eight kills and four blocks (one solo), and Jaden McBride chipped in with 10 digs, six kills, and four blocks. Emily Weaver tallied a match-high 43 assists to go along with eight digs and three service aces, while Tamzen Wilson collected a match-leading 19 digs.

The Eagles used a 9-3 run to pull ahead in the first set, 18-15. Lynn got back to within a point at 19-18, but a 4-0 spurt capped by back-to-back aces from McBride made it 23-18. The Blue and Gold gladly traded sideouts from there to claim a 25-20 set victory.

Lynn scored the first six points of set two, and the lead grew to 15-5 before ERAU mounted a furious comeback, winning 10 of the next 12 points to make it 17-15. A few points later, LU pulled away with a 5-0 spurt and the Fighting Knights would take the set, 25-19.

Set three turned out to be a marathon affair that featured 19 ties and nine lead changes. A 7-1 run in the middle of the set put the Blue and Gold in a good position, leading 16-12. The Fighting Knights battled back to tie it at 16 and retake the lead, 20-19, after which point neither side would lead by more than a point for the rest of the set. Lynn had three separate set points, while Embry-Riddle had five set points, with a Fighting Knight attack error proving to be the final point of the frame, giving ERAU a 32-30 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.

Lynn held a 12-6 lead in the fourth set when the Eagles caught fire, scoring eight straight points to gain a 14-12 advantage. An Aly Freeland ace capped a quick 4-0 spurt that built the lead up to 21-16, but Lynn responded with a 3-0 run to cut it to 21-19. After ERAU scored two straight, the Fighting Knights scored the next four points to tie the set at 23. A Canfield kill gave the Eagles their first match point, which Lynn fought off. But Embry-Riddle then forced back-to-back attack errors to take the set, 26-24, finishing the match with a 3-1 win.

The Eagles return home on Tuesday, Nov. 2 to host Barry in another SSC match. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
