ORLANDO, Fla. – It was a historic tournament for
Ian Aldarondo (69-73-67=209) as he broke the program record for the lowest 54-hole score en route to a career-best second-place finish. Overall, the Embry-Riddle men's golf team (295-297-291=883) placed eighth at the two-day, three-round McDonough Cup at the Rio Pinar Country Club.
Aldarondo made a statement right away with two birdies and an eagle over the first five holes to grab an early lead at four under par. By the end of the first round, Aldarondo shot below par on five holes, which was the most on the squad.
While his first round was impressive, Aldarondo's third round was even better. Six birdies, including three over holes 14, 15 and 16, gave the senior a one-stroke lead with two to play. Unfortunately, Javier Calles of Nova Southeastern scored in the red on each of the final two holes to pass Aldarondo by one stroke.
In addition to the three-round program record, Aldarondo also shot the lowest round of his career during the final round with a stroke total of 67, which is tied for the fourth-lowest by an Eagle in history.
John Triplett (72-73-75=220) had a strong first day of the tournament, especially during the second round where he led the team in birdies (4). The junior thrived on par-3 holes with an average stroke total of 2.9, tied for the best in the field.
Georgios Pachiadakis' (75-79-71=225) third round was one of the most consistent rounds of the tournament. He was bogey-free with a birdie over the final 18 holes to close out strong.
Like Triplett,
Jacob Salazar (79-72-78=229) also improved the second time through the course with an even-par 72, which was the best score recorded by an Eagle in the round. Additionally, it was his lowest round of the season.
Aaron Turner (85-86-86=257) completed his first tournament as an Eagle.
Michael Faringer (75-76-73=224) participated as an individual.
Nova Southeastern (844) held on to its day-one lead to win the tournament by a wide margin of 13 strokes. Eastern Florida State (857) edged out Mount Olive (859) for second while Palm Beach Atlantic (862) and Indianapolis (864) capped off the top five.
That concludes the fall portion of the schedule for the Embry-Riddle. The Eagles will enjoy three months off before returning to action at the Matlock Invitational on Feb. 4 in Lakeland, Fla.
