Men’s Soccer Starts Homestand With 2-1 Loss to Lynn

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's soccer team began its season-ending three-match homestand with a 2-1 loss to Lynn on Saturday at the ERAU Soccer Stadium. The Eagles (2-8-3, 0-6-2 Sunshine State Conference) nearly came away with a point when Yali Shiray sent a prayer of a shot to the top left corner of the goal as time expired, but it was barely saved by Lynn (3-3-5, 3-2-2 SSC).

Embry-Riddle started the match with two quick shots in the first five minutes, one each from Andy Paterson and Sandro Henning. However, the Eagles were forced to play defensive for the rest of the half as the Fighting Knights dominated possession and constantly advanced into their offensive end. Lynn would send 15 unanswered shots toward the net, one of which managed to find its way through in the 37th minute.

The second period was a different story as both squads were evenly matched throughout the 45 minute span. In fact, Embry-Riddle managed to outshoot the Fighting Knights 5-4 in that timeframe.

Henning found the equalizer in the 63rd minute thanks to a foul issued to Lynn inside the box. Henning rolled a shot through the bottom left corner to tie the match at 1-1. It was his fourth successful penalty kick of the year, tied for the second most in a single season in program history and the seventh most in a career.

Unfortunately, the Fighting Knights put the Eagles in a deficit once again with a goal at 71:56.

Thomas Loesel, Embry-Riddle's starting keeper, made a great save with six minutes to play to keep the Blue and Gold in the match. Lynn crossed the ball from the left side to a wide open Fighting Knight on the right. The opposing attacker lifted his leg above his waist and shot the ball on the hop right at Loesel, who was closely guarding the near post and was able to corral the attempt.

The Eagles pieced together an attack with three minutes remaining as Anthony Velez sent a cross into the box. Three members of the Blue and Gold were in the vicinity, but it was Louis Walker who managed to connect his cleat to the pass. With just the goalie to beat, Walker reached the ball as it bounced up to his waist and tried to push the shot through on the right but narrowly missed wide.

With the clock winding down, Stefano Grimaldi passed the ball to Shiray, who trapped it halfway between the box and midfield. He ripped a last-chance shot to the top left corner as the clock struck zero, but Lynn's netminder prevented it from going in the goal.

Henning picked up his team-high fifth goal of the season, tied for fifth most in the SSC. He also led the squad in shots with two and was one of three Eagles to record a shot on goal along with Shiray and Velez. In the net, Loesel added four to his conference-leading save total of 62, 14 clear of anyone else in the league. It bumped him up to 76 in his two-year career at ERAU, which moved him from tied for ninth to eighth on the program's all-time saves list.

Embry-Riddle continues its three-match homestand next Saturday, Oct. 15 against No. 20 Rollins with a slightly earlier start time of 6 p.m. Both teams met earlier in the year on Aug. 28. The match ended in a 2-2 tie in Winter Park.
