Eagles Fall to Northern State, 64-56

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, falling to Northern State 64-56 in their final game of the Bahama House Shootout. The loss puts the Eagles at 4-1, while the Wolves improved to 6-1 on the year.

The Wolves opened Saturday's game on a 5-0 run and extended the lead to 9-2 as the Eagles struggled to get their offense going. At the 4:29 mark, Kailey Turpening's three-pointer ended a two-minute scoring drought for the Eagles and after an empty offensive trip for the Wolves, Eva Zaragoza finished a layup to make it a two-point game (9-7). Zaragoza's trey a minute later gave the Eagles their first lead of the game (10-9), but NSU outscored the Eagles 4-2 in the last 2:17 to take a 14-12 lead into the second period.

The Wolves outscored the Eagles 18-13 in the second quarter, thanks in part to nine points off five Eagle turnovers. The Eagles were able to tie the score at 23-23 with 5:17 left in the quarter, but the Wolves closed out the period on another 9-2 run to lead 32-25 at the half.

The Eagles were still trailing by seven (34-27) just under three minutes into the third quarter when Zaragoza handed the ball the Madyson Jean-Louis on the right side. Jean-Louis buried her second three of the night and that bucket triggered an 11-4 Eagle run that tied the score at 38-38. The teams were still deadlocked (42-42) with 3:10 left in the frame, but once again, turnovers were the Eagles' undoing as the Wolves scored six unanswered to take a 48-42 advantage into the fourth period.

A 42.9 percent (6-of-14) shooting clip helped Northern State seal the win in the fourth. The Eagles were a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe and took care of the ball with only one miscue in the final 10 minutes. But they were able to connect on only three of their 16 field goal attempts, which helped the Wolves take the win.

Zaragoza and Jean-Louis tallied 11 points apiece to lead the Eagle offense. Jean-Louis also had a career-best five steals to go with three assists and three rebounds. Turpening added a career-high eight points, while Keturah Balabyekkubo led the Eagles on the boards with seven rebounds.

The Eagles return to Sunshine State Conference play on Wednesday when they host Saint Leo at the ICI Center. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.

The 2022-23 Embry-Riddle women's basketball season is presented by Daytona Mitsubishi.
