DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 15th-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team suffered a 5-2 loss to NAIA No. 2 Keiser in the Eagles' season opener at the Crotty Tennis Complex on Tuesday. The win improved the Seahawks' record to 2-0.
The Seahawks claimed an early advantage by winning the doubles point beginning with Luke Simkiss and Bart Nouws' 6-2 win over
Alexis Guedy and
Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo at the third spot. On court two, the Eagles'
Lukas Schneider and
Michele Iftimie downed Yassir Kilani and Soufiane Elmebahi 7-5, but Keiser managed to come away with the doubles point when Geronimo Barrios and Juan Marrero held off
Juan Ortiz Couder and
Andres Donayre 7-6 (4) on court one.
Keiser extended its advantage to 2-0 when El Mesbahi downed Schneider 6-0, 6-2. But the Blue and Gold pulled level at 2-2 when Guedy defeated Kilani 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 and Iftimie downed Frank Oervad 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5.
The match at No. 1 singles saw Ortiz Couder take the first set 6-4, but Simkiss battled back to take the next two sets 6-0, 6-4 to put the Seahawks back in front.
The clinching point for Keiser came on court two when Donayre was forced to retire due to injury in his match against Barrios.
The Eagles' next match will be at home against No. 3 Saint Leo at 3:30 p.m. on Feb. 8.
