Softball Upsets No. 14 Auburn-Montgomery in Final Day of Eagle Classic

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle softball team returned to the win column on Saturday in the final day of action for the 2022 Eagle Classic. Just like Friday, the Eagles (2-1) faced No. 14 Auburn-Montgomery (5-2) and No. 7 Valdosta State (6-2). In another high-scoring affair, Embry-Riddle defeated the Warhawks 9-5 but were shut out against the Blazers 5-0. The victory over AUM marked the first win versus a ranked opponent since March 16, 2019, when Embry-Riddle defeated No. 11 Florida Tech 8-1.

Game 1 | Embry-Riddle - 9, No. 14 Auburn-Montgomery - 5

Like yesterday's meeting, the Eagles used an early surge to build a large lead after the first inning of play. After the Warhawks opened up the scoring with a run in the top of the first, Embry-Riddle used three straight hits to respond. Maggie Scott scored on a Mahaliyah Sandridge single to tie the game, which only lasted a few minutes as Gigi Auricchio put the ball in play to allow Lia Johnson to come home. ReAnne Drayton capped off the stretch of scoring with a base hit to bring Sandridge home.

In the second, the Eagles bumped the lead up to three when Mia Macchia got an base from an AUM miscue and then stole second. In scoring position, Macchia used a double by Scott to come home for a fourth Eagle run.

Both squads traded blows in the third inning. The Warhawks inched closer in the runs column with a two-RBI double to trim Embry-Riddle's lead to 4-3, but the Eagles answered once again. Sandridge used a wild pitch to score and Auricchio touched home as well for a two-run inning.

After a scoreless fourth, AUM attempted to manufacture a comeback in the fifth inning. The first two Warhawk batters reached base and later scored on a single to trim the deficit to one. With one out and the tying run on third, an AUM batter flew out to left field. The runner on third tagged up and sprinted home but was thrown out by Mia Macchia's laser throw to preserve the lead.

Embry-Riddle padded its lead in the bottom of the inning when Karina Ortiz-Munoz recorded her first hit as an Eagle, a double that allowed Drayton to cross home. Mallory Kinahan followed suit with her first Embry-Riddle hit to bring Ortiz-Munoz across the plate. Lastly, Kinahan used an error to touch home base and bump the Eagle lead up to 9-5, a score that would remain the same throughout the remainder of the contest.

Three players tallied two hits (Johnson, Sandridge, Scott) while Sandridge led the team in runs (2) and Drayton in RBIs (2).

Kelsi Collins earned her first win of the season with two strikeouts over four innings pitched. Kinahan picked up her first save of the year as well.

The nine runs on ten hits were a season high, and for the first time in a game this year, Embry-Riddle did not strikeout.

Game 2 | Embry-Riddle - 0, No. 7 Valdosta State - 5

Similar to the first meeting, Embry-Riddle and Valdosta state relied on effective pitching throughout a majority of the game. Neither squad could manufacture any offense over the first five innings. Even with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, the Eagles still found a way to stall the Blazer offense and keep the contest at a stalemate.

Starting pitcher Kinahan did well to quiet Valdosta State's bats. She limited the Blazers to only three hits up until that point with two strikeouts.

However, Valdosta State was able to make solid contact in the sixth inning with a triple and a two-run blast to jump ahead 3-0. Two Embry-Riddle errors in the seventh resulted in an additional pair of runs for the Blazers as the Eagles fell 5-0.

Five different batters registered a hit for Embry-Riddle with only Sandridge's hit going for extra bases.

The Eagles open up Sunshine State Conference play next weekend with a series against Rollins beginning Friday, Feb. 18, at 6 p.m.
