DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team suffered a tough loss to Valdosta State on Friday. Five of the six singles matches went to three sets and at the end of play, the Blazers (1-2) managed to edge the Eagles (2-4) 4-3.
The doubles point went to the Eagles who notched wins at the second and third spots.
Jessica Wira Hadipoernomo and
Mafalda Soares were efficient in their win on court two, dispatching Hera Bjork and Anastasiia Vorobiova 6-1. At the third spot,
Julia Mautner and
Sabrina Ehrenfort trailed Elisa Beau and Magda Tuells Bonet 4-1 but rebounded to top the VSU pair 6-4 to clinch the doubles point.
Itxaso Blanco extended the Eagle lead to 2-0 when she bested Natalie Kohoutkova 6-1, 6-3 on court one to open singles play.
The Blazers were able to even the score when Tuells Bonet outlasted Carla Cabrera del Hierro 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 2 and Vorobiova won a three-setter against Ehrenfort, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, on court three.
Wira Hadipoernomo earned the Eagles' only three-set victory with a 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 win over Beau on court four, but Rachelle Stareveld pulled VSU level once again when she battled Tripaldelli to a three-set victory, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 5.
The final match off the court saw Mautner take a 6-1 win over Adrianna Barrio in the first set, but Barrio rallied to win the remaining stanzas 7-6 (3), 6-0 to clinch the VSU victory.
The Eagles return to conference play at 2 p.m. on Thursday when they host Eckerd at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
