Softball Takes Opening SSC Series Against Rollins

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - After winning game one yesterday, the Embry-Riddle softball team split Saturday's doubleheader 4-0, 0-6 versus Rollins (4-2, 2-1 Sunshine State Conference). This marked the fifth straight series the Eagles (4-4, 2-1 SSC) won against the Tars and the fourth conference-opening series in a row Embry-Riddle won.

It was one of the most unusual doubleheaders ever witnessed as a sacrifice-fly triple play and a no-hitter both occurred on the afternoon.

GAME 1 | Embry-Riddle - 4, Rollins - 0
The Eagles continued their defensive dominance from game one on Friday. Mallory Kinahan got the nod in the circle for the opening game of the doubleheader. She sent Rollins down in order through each of the first two innings.

Some of her success could be contributed to a pair of stellar plays made by Embry-Riddle outfielders. In the top of the second, a Tar smoked a ball toward Savannah Brockenbrough in left field. She sprinted toward the wall, reached up her glove, and snagged the ball on the run as the sun shined in her eyes. An inning later, Maggie Scott lunged at a shallow fly ball to center field and caught it just inches before it landed.

Similar to the first game of the series, the Eagles started the scoring in the fourth frame. Scott received a base on balls and then stole second. Lia Johnson planned to lay down a sacrifice bunt to advance Scott, but beat out the throw as Rollins' pitcher tossed it into right field, which allowed Scott to score.

Embry-Riddle threatened to blow the game open in the fifth with the bases loaded and no outs when one of the most unusual plays occurred. Johnson sent a fly ball to center field. Ashlyn MacVeigh tagged up and touched home to give the Eagles a second run. However, the two other baserunners failed to retreat to their original bases and were eventually both standing on second base. The runner on second was out due to not tagging up and the runner on first was out due to passing the lead runner, which led to a triple play.

In the sixth inning, Embry-Riddle added another two runs to its lead as Lauren Latoria used a sacrifice bunt to push Gigi Auricchio across the plate. Latoria headed to second base in an attempt to draw the defenses' attention. She forced the Tars' catcher to throw across the diamond, which gave Mahaliyah Sandridge time to score a fourth unanswered run for the Eagles before the ball could return home.

Kinahan (2-2) picked up her first career shutout after limiting Rollins to five hits over seven innings pitched with two strikeouts.

Five different batters recorded a hit for Embry-Riddle. Sandridge's double was the only extra-base hit.

GAME 2 | Embry-Riddle - 0, Rollins - 6
The Eagles' offense struggled in game three as the squad failed to record a hit for the first time in exactly six years.

A double by Jaden Walker scored Ashley Troutman for Rollins' first run in the second inning. Two more runs were added in the third as an Embry-Riddle error allowed Ravien Bryant to come home. One batter later, Taylor Waters singled to bring home Chelsea Peace.

The Tars' Ashley Worrell received her first hit of the series in the fourth inning as the starting pitcher sent a bloop single down the left field line to pick up two RBIs. Rollins added a sixth run in the seventh when Walker once again hit Troutman home.

Eagle batters were unable to get anything going against Worrell. Embry-Riddle put only four runners on base from two hit-by-pitches, an error and a walk. Auricchio was a recipient of three of those.

Kelsi Collins (2-2) picked up the loss after allowing two earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts over five innings. Delaney Morgan pitched for the first time of the season. She threw two innings and gave up one unearned run on two hits.

The Eagles conclude their 10-game homestand next weekend with a series against Nova Southeastern beginning on Friday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m.
