Men’s Basketball Fends Off Late Charge From Spartans

TAMPA, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team followed up a three-game homestand with an 89-82 win at Tampa (13-6, 9-5 Sunshine State Conference) on Saturday. Strong offensive play continued for the Blue and Gold as the Eagles (18-5, 11-3 SSC) outshot the opposition for the third game in a row.

Over the opening five minutes, the Eagles raced out to a 10-2 lead with Elijah Jenkins and Malcolm Whitlow responsible for all of the squad's points. On the opposite end of the court, Embry-Riddle held the Spartans to just 1-for-7 on the floor over that span. Tampa then responded with an 8-0 run to even the score, and neither team could create much separation for the remainder of the half.

Malcolm Whitlow nailed a 3-point shot with under 30 seconds left to send the Eagles into the break up 36-31. The sophomore tallied a team-high 14 points in the half and was 3-of-4 from behind the arc.

Throughout the first seven minutes of the second half, Embry-Riddle maintained a cushion of around five points until the 13-minute mark when the Eagles made seven-consecutive shots to fuel a 22-11 spurt to lead 74-59 with under eight minutes to play. The Spartans continued to fight and slowly chipped away at the deficit until Embry-Riddle's advantage was trimmed to three points with eight seconds to go. Despite the threat, the Eagles remained poised at the charity stripe and drained nine of the 12 total free throws over the final 1:12 of the contest to preserve the win.

Elijah Jenkins led Embry-Riddle  in scoring with 26 points, his highest total over the last 14 games. Romeo Crouch also chipped in 22 points, the fifth time in the previous six games he has eclipsed the 20-point mark, while Malcolm Whitlow added 18 points. Additionally, Crouch converted on 12 free throws, the most in a single game this season by an Eagle.

Embry-Riddle returns to the ICI Center on Wednesday, Feb. 9, at 7:30 p.m. as the Eagles host Lynn for Food Brings Hope Night.
