DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle women's tennis team suffered a 5-0 loss to fourth-ranked Nova Southeastern in both teams' Sunshine State Conference opener, Saturday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The match was closer than the final score suggested, however, as the Eagles won one doubles match and were ahead in the singles matches on courts two and four before the match was called due to rain.
The Sharks opened the scoring with a win at No. 2 doubles as Diane Follin-Arbelet and Karolina Snita downed
Jessica Wira Hadipoernomo and
Alessia Tripaldelli 6-0. NSU then clinched the doubles point with Celia Montero Esteva and Eva Goncharov's 6-2 win over
Sabrina Ehrenfort and
Julia Mautner on court three.
At the top spot,
Itxaso Blanco and Carla Cabrera del Hierro rallied for a 6-4 defeat of Julie Razafindranalay and Zala Dovnik to close out doubles play.
The Sharks added two more points to their team total with wins on courts five and three, and ninth-ranked Natalie Espinal held of Cabrera del Hierro to clinch the NSU win.
At No. 4 singles, WIra Hadipoernomo dropped the first set to Dovnik 6-2, but rallied to take the second 6-4 to force a 10-point tiebreaker. Wira Hadipoernomo and Dovnik were unable to finish the match, however, as rain halted play with Dovnik holding a 6-4 edge in the tiebreaker.
Playing at No. 2 singles, Blanco got the better of her first-set matchup against Razafindranalay topping the NSU senior 6-3. Blanco was up 5-4 in the second set, but Razafindranalay came back to tie the score at 6-6 and force a tiebreaker, but like their counterparts on court four, Blanco and Razafindranalay's was stopped due to the rain with Blanco up 3-1 in the tiebreaker.
The Eagles will be back in action at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday when they host ninth-ranked Saint Leo in another SSC match.
