ST. AUGUSTINE, Florida - The Embry-Riddle women's golf team opened up play in the 2022 spring season on Monday at the World Golf Invitational, hosted by Flagler. The Eagles shot an opening round 310, their second-lowest round of the 2021-22 campaign, and sit in ninth overall at the 21-team event, held at Slammer & Squire.
The Eagles are four shots clear of the hosts, No. 23 Flagler (314), and just nine shots out of a top-five showing.
Mackenzie Dieter (75) and
Kelly Harris (75) led the way for the Blue and Gold on Monday, with Dieter's three birdies the best on the squad.
Sophia Dieter (80), and
Millie Lawson (80) rounded out the Eagle scorers on the day, with
Marybeth McGuire (84) also competing for ERAU.
Paula Valdivia (83) is participating as an individual.
The Eagles were very good on par 5s, finishing (+3), the third-best par 5 scoring in the field.
The par-72, 6,049 yard course was played in soggy conditions on Monday.
"It was a great start to our spring season today," Head Coach
Maria Lopez said. "We stayed super resilient in challenging playing conditions and against a premier field. They dug in and followed their process to stay unflappable. We are a little disappointed because we felt like we had a little more in the tank today, but hopefully we'll get to show that tomorrow."
Nova Southeastern (290), Rollins (295), Saint Leo (296), Limestone (299), and Tampa (301) claim the top five spots in the field after day one.
The Eagles will conclude play tomorrow at the World Golf Invitational with 18 holes at Slammer & Squire.
The 2021-22 Embry-Riddle Women's Golf season is presented by Tijuana Flats.
