Baseball Grabs First SSC Win of Season; Edges Sailfish 6-5

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle baseball team earned its first victory against a Sunshine State Conference foe this season on Saturday. The Eagles fought off a late rally by Palm Beach Atlantic to escape with a 6-5 win.

Embry-Riddle (7-11, 1-6 SSC) improves to 43-15-1 all-time against the Sailfish (11-9, 3-4 SSC) and 23-9 at home. Each of the previous four contests have gone in favor of the Blue and Gold.

Starting pitcher Garrett Goodall breezed through the first two frames, needing only 16 total pitches. After a leadoff single, Goodall forced PBA to hit into a 5-4-3 double play to end the opening inning. In the second, the junior retired the Sailfish in order.

Scoring began in the bottom of the first when Daniel Trillo got on base after PBA's right fielder dropped his fly ball. Trillo then came home on a single from Jeremy Kennedy-Davis.

The Eagles' slim lead didn't last long when, in the third inning, the Sailfish strung together two hits, a walk, and an error to rack up three runs and lead 3-1.

More PBA miscues allowed Embry-Riddle to level the score in the third. Trillo reached base yet again, this time with a single, and Kennedy-Davis took advantage of a dropped foul ball to double down the left field line. Trillo touched home for a second time thanks to an error by the Sailfish third baseman. Later, Zach Coldsnow found an open area in center field to allow Kennedy-Davis to cross home plate and tie the game.

Three runs ballooned to six one inning later. Kennedy-Davis used his third hit of the night to plate Alex Britton while Andrew Martinez doubled with the bases loaded to bump the Eagles up 6-3.

An outstanding defensive play was made in the fifth when Max Law sprinted toward a ball hit right up the middle of the infield. The shortstop slid, corralled the ball, and threw to first for a spectacular out.

Casey Keller took over on the mound for Goodall in the sixth and kept PBA's offense at bay through nearly the next three innings.

In the top of the eighth, the Sailfish had two outs with a runner on third. PBA's Sean Houck sent a ground ball dribbling toward Ryan Carroll at third. He was in a good position to field it until it took a wild hop on the edge of the infield grass and escaped into left, allowing a run to score and trimming Embry-Riddle's lead to 6-4.

One frame later in the ninth inning, the Sailfish threatened to tie the game. The first two batters recorded a double and a single to put the tying run on base. The lead runner eventually came home on a wild pitch, but reliever Joe Balsam shut the door with a strikeout and groundout to secure the win.

The top six in the order went a combined 10-for-25, led by Kennedy-Davis' 3-for-5 line with a pair of runs and RBI. Martinez and Robert Post also notched multiple hits on the evening.

Goodall (2-2) received the win after allowing just three runs on six hits with a trio of strikeouts over five innings pitched. Balsam grabbed his first save of the season due to his perfect ninth frame.

Both teams return to Sliwa Stadium tomorrow to cap off the three-game series with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
