Baseball Splits Doubleheader on Saturday; Takes Series From Sailfish

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - After claiming its first Sunshine State Conference win one day ago, the Embry-Riddle baseball team took it a step further on Saturday. The Eagles (8-12, 2-7 SSC) split a doubleheader with the Sailfish (12-10, 4-5 SSC) to win their first conference series of the season.

Embry-Riddle's offense was vastly different in the pair of games, scoring no runs on five hits in the first contest but exploding for 10 runs on 14 hits in the second contest.

In the all-time series, the Eagles are now 44-16-1 against PBA with a 24-10 mark at home. Additionally, Embry-Riddle has won five of the last six matchups.

GAME 1 | Embry-Riddle - 0, Palm Beach Atlantic - 2

Runs were difficult to come by in game one. The two starting pitchers, Kelsey Ward (ERAU) and Mike Entenza (PBA), were locked in from the start, combining for 13 strikeouts through the first six innings.

Unfortunately, PBA pieced together a two-run frame in the top of the seventh with two singles and a pair of walks. With two runners on and still nobody out, the Eagles inserted reliever Jonathan Martin, who limited the damage by striking out the following two batters and then left the bases loaded with a fly out.

Then in the top of the ninth following a leadoff single by the Sailfish, Matthew Faranda hit a fly ball to left field. Andrew Martinez tracked it down and made a laser throw to first for a double play as the PBA baserunner failed to tag up and get back to the bag in time.

In the bottom half of the inning, Zach Coldsnow's one-out double gave Embry-Riddle life. He later advanced to third on a wild pitch, but was left stranded as the following two batters struck out.

Five Eagles tallied one hit in the contest, three of which were doubles. Ward (0-4) received the loss despite only allowing only two runs over six innings of pitching with six whiffs.

GAME 2 | Embry-Riddle - 10, Palm Beach Atlantic - 1

Game two was a completely different story for the Embry-Riddle offense, which racked up four runs in the first inning. Five consecutive singles, highlighted by Kevin Vittoria's two-RBI base knock, allowed the Blue and Gold to set the tone early with four runs right out of the gate.

One inning later, Garrett Bogart pushed Jeremy Kennedy-Davis home with a single to right field for a fifth Eagle run.

In the third, Martinez used a dropped third strike, stolen base, and passed ball to help him navigate the bases before scoring on Ryan Carroll's single to make it 6-0 Embry-Riddle.

Two more runs came across in the fourth when Bogart touched home on a wild pitch before Nick Hoffman used a single to push Martinez across.

The Eagles' final two runs came in the sixth inning as an error and wild pitch gave Martinez and Hoffman the green light to come home.

The Sailfish removed their goose egg on the scoreboard in the seventh with a triple and single to start the inning, but that was all PBA could muster as Embry-Riddle held the Sailfish to their lowest single-game run total of the season.

Both Bogart and Carroll tallied three hits in the game. Martinez went 2-for-4 with four runs and an RBI while Vittoria led the squad in RBI with two.

Garner Spoljaric (2-0) was masterful in his longest outing of the season. He held PBA to one run on four hits with five strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched. Tyler Shaw, Keagan Perez, and Tristan Harley each had clean relief appearances.

The Eagles are back in action tomorrow in a neutral, non-conference matchup with Grand Valley State at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Florida. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
