Men’s Tennis Cruises to 7-0 Win Over Montevallo

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.— From start to finish, the Embry-Riddle men's tennis team dominated Montevallo to get back in the win column with a 7-0 victory over the Falcons on Tuesday at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles (10-3) prevented Montevallo (3-6) from winning a single set in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

The match began with a clean sweep in doubles for Embry-Riddle. Alexis Guedy and Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo opened the scoring with a 6-1 defeat of Alexandre Laplante and Gavin Salton at No. 3, and Juan Ortiz Couder and Luke Paschal downed Phillippe Zehender and Sergi Martinez by the same score to record the clinching point.

Playing at No. 2 doubles, Lukas Schneider and Michele Iftimie got off to a slow start, falling behind Nick Hartmann and Jonathan de Jesus 5-0. But the Eagle duo rallied to overtake their opponents 6-5 and ultimately topped the Falcon pair 7-6 (7-1) to complete the sweep and earn their team-high ninth doubles win.

To start singles play, 13th-ranked Guedy won his ninth match in a row with his 6-2, 6-0 defeat of Martinez in No. 2 singles. No. 2 Ortiz Couder ended his match soon after as he downed Dylan Valentine with a pair of 6-3 sets in No. 1 singles.

Singles No. 3 saw Diaz Rodrigo defeat Julius Ziebart 6-2, 6-3 to earn the match-clinching point for Embry-Riddle. Play continued as Schneider fought back in set one to win 7-6 (7-1) over Zehender before taking set two 6-3 in No. 4 singles for a fifth point.

In No. 5 singles, Fernando Alonso swept Jules Dugue 6-2, 6-0, and Paschal closed out the match with a win over Hartmann 6-4, 6-2 in singles No. 6.

It was the fifth time this season the Eagles swept the opposition 7-0.

The Eagles continue their seven-match homestand on Saturday, March 26 with a meeting against California Lutheran at 10 a.m.
