DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The fourth-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team earned its sixth shutout of the season on Saturday with a 7-0 win over California Lutheran at the Crotty Tennis Complex. The Eagles' record now stands at 11-3 on the year, while the Kingsmen, who are ranked No. 36 in NCAA III, move to 5-6 overall.
The Eagles swept through all three doubles matches and notched straight-set victories in all six singles contests, dropping just nine games combined at the third through sixth singles positions.
The Eagles' roll through doubles started with
Alexis Guedy and
Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo's 6-2 defeat of Parker McBride and Shawn Rothermel at No. 3. Luke Schneider and
Michele Iftimie downed Griffin Biernat and Ben Vincze by the same score at No. 2, and
Juan Ortiz Couder and
Luke Paschal rallied for a 6-4 win over Ryan Murphy and Darvel Lossangoye at No. 1 to wrap up the sweep.
Fernando Alonso's 6-0, 6-1 win over Ryan Murphy at the sixth spot got the Eagles their first singles point of the day. Iftimie was the next Eagles to earn a win with his 6-1, 6-0 defeat of Rothermel at No. 3, and Schneider scored the clinching point by topping Griffin 6-1, 6-2 on court five.
After Diaz Rodrigo downed Vincze (6-1, 6-2) and Guedy bested McBride (6-1, 6-3), Ortiz Couder sealed the shutout with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Lossangoye.
The Eagles return to Sunshine State Conference play at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, hosting No. 21 Rollins at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
