No. 25 Softball Uses Program-Record Three Triples to Sweep Eckerd

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Program records continued to fall in the Embry-Riddle softball team's 11-0 and 4-2 wins over Eckerd on Saturday. After notching a season-high 12 runs and tying the single-game program record in home runs (3) and hits (18) in game one of the series on Friday, the Eagles tallied three triples in the first game of the doubleheader for the most in a game in program history. In total, Embry-Riddle (17-7, 9-3 Sunshine State Conference) outscored (27-6) and outhit (33-14) the Tritons (16-13, 5-10 SSC) by a wide margin in the Blue and Gold's series victory.

The sweep moved the Eagles to 16-2 all-time against Eckerd and a perfect 9-0 at home.

GAME 1 | Eckerd - 0, No. 25 Embry-Riddle - 11 (5 Inn.)

Game one was all Embry-Riddle from start to finish. The bats stayed hot from Friday's 12-run effort as the Eagles struck for four runs in the bottom of the first. Triples from Mahaliyah Sandridge and Karina Ortiz-Munoz aided Embry-Riddle in jumping out to a large lead.

A trio of Eagles came home in the following frame on a three-run home run by Maggie Scott, the first of her season and third of her career.

Another three-bagger in the third, this time from Kelsey Kressler, plated Ortiz-Munoz to continue the scoring. Mia Macchia then brought Kressler home to make it 9-0.

Two strikeouts in the top of the fourth by starting pitcher Mallory Kinahan helped her retire the Tritons in order for the third consecutive frame.

Pinch-hit singles by Savannah Brockenbrough and Ashton Aycock, which was her first hit of the season, started yet another multi-run inning that saw Brockenbrough score on Aycock's base knock and Scott touch home on a wild throw that escaped into center field on a throwdown to second.

Unfortunately, Kinahan's no-hit bid was broken up in the top of the fifth with one out. An Eckerd pinch hitter smacked a strong ground ball up the middle of the infield. Second baseman ReAnne Drayton made a fantastic effort to dive and prevent the ball from rolling into the outfield but couldn't stay with it to get the out. However, the Tritons were unable to reduce the deficit below eight runs, and the mercy rule was enforced.

Ortiz-Munoz was the only member of the Blue and Gold to record multiple hits (2-for-2). She also picked up two runs and an RBI. Scott notched a season-high three RBI after going 1-for-2 at the dish with two runs.

Kinahan (6-4) earned the win after tossing five shutout innings with six strikeouts, which matched her season-best.

GAME 2 | Eckerd - 2, No. 25 Embry-Riddle - 4

For the second time in the series, Eckerd managed to score in the top of the first. A two-out solo shot to left had the Tritons up early. The opposition's lead double in the second when two singles and a hit batter loaded the bases. A groundball then pushed a second Eckerd run across the plate.

There wasn't much action in the third except for a superhero-like dive by Sandridge to nab a line drive out of the air.

Through that inning, the Eagles were held hitless after tallying 26 in the first two games. Strategically, Embry-Riddle changed to a small-ball approach when Lia Johnson and Scott bunted to get on base to begin the fourth. Drayton hit home Johnson to put a run on the scoreboard for the Eagles, but one wasn't enough. Kressler came up clutch with two outs as her single to center allowed Scott and Drayton to score to take a 3-2 advantage.

An insurance run was added in the fifth when Scott's triple plated Sandridge for a fourth run for Embry-Riddle.

Things got interesting in the top of the seventh as the Tritons used two hits and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases with two outs, but starting pitcher Kelsi Collins induced a groundout to shortstop to end the game.

Scott led at the plate with a 2-for-3 mark as well as a run and RBI. Kressler also had a solid third game with a pair of RBI on one hit in three at-bats.

Collins (11-3) won her seventh-consecutive start. She allowed two earned runs on eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts.

The Eagles travel to face No. 9 Tampa for a three-game series starting Friday, April 1 at 6 p.m.
