Softball Falls in Pitchers’ Duel Against Sailfish

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Offense proved to be difficult to manufacture for the Embry-Riddle softball team on Friday night as the Eagles (7-5, 5-2 Sunshine State Conference) narrowly fell 1-0 to Palm Beach Atlantic. Only six hits were recorded between the two teams.

With the loss, Embry-Riddle moves to 5-9 all-time against the Sailfish and 3-5 on the road. Additionally, this is the fourth time in the last six meetings that the Sailfish have won by a score of 1-0.

PBA (6-5, 5-2 SSC) threatened early on with a leadoff double in the bottom of the first. Starting pitcher Kelsi Collins kept her cool, though, and got each of the next three batters out, two via the strikeout, to strand the runner in scoring position.

The right-hander breezed through the next two innings and retired the Sailfish in order on each occasion including striking out the side in the third.

Embry-Riddle nearly got out of another jam in the fourth frame after a one-out double to left center field, but the PBA baserunner touched home on a single to put the Eagles in a 1-0 hole.

In the fifth, Collins came up clutch again with back-to-back strikeouts to prevent the runners on second and third from advancing and keep the deficit from increasing.

One inning later, the Sailfish were poised to add a few insurance runs with the bases loaded after two hit batters and an error. Fortunately, Collins grabbed a line drive to give her squad a chance to rally in the seventh.

With two outs and a 1-2 count, ReAnne Drayton fired a ground ball up the middle of the infield to keep Embry-Riddle alive, but that's as far as she was able to get as the Eagles fell 1-0.

Karina Ortiz-Munoz and Drayton were the only two players to notch a hit on the evening for the Blue and Gold.

Collins (4-3) received the loss but had another stellar outing allowing only one earned run off of four hits with eight strikeouts. This was her fifth consecutive start allowing two earned runs or less.

The series concludes tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at noon.
