DAYTONA BEACH, Florida -
Garrett Goodall gave the Embry-Riddle baseball team a quality start and then some against the nation's top-ranked NCAA II team, but the Eagles couldn't come up with the offense against Tampa on Friday night in the two teams' Sunshine State Conference series opener, as the Spartans downed ERAU 4-0. The Eagles (14-15, 4-9 SSC) managed just four hits against UT (27-3, 12-1 SSC) starter Haden Erbe, and were shutout for the fourth time in 2022.
The Spartans scored a lone run in the second, and then doubled their lead in the third, but Goodall (2-3) kept the Eagles in it throughout his seven innings of work, not allowing Tampa to grow its lead and giving the Eagles a chance to prevail.
Embry-Riddle had an early chance to score in the second with runners at first and third, but Erbe (7-0) got a strikeout and harmless ground out to end the threat, and the Eagles really only threatened once more when they had the same situation in the fifth, but again Erbe wasn't bothered, fanning back-to-back Eagles to send the game to the sixth with UT still in front, 2-0.
The Spartans were able to score two insurance runs in the ninth, but they were unneeded as the Spartan closer Braydon Nelson worked a 1-2-3 frame to seal the UT win.
Goodall went seven innings, scattering seven hits and two runs with five strikeouts.
J.C. Carrell pitched the final two innings, allowing one earned run on three hits with three Ks.
A decision about tomorrow's doubleheader will be made in the morning. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m., but expected rain may alter the weekend schedule.
