No. 21 Softball Wins Final Home Game in Walk-Off Fashion; Splits Doubleheader With Saint Leo

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A walk-off win in the final home softball game of the season sent the Embry-Riddle faithful home happy on Saturday. The No. 21 Eagles used a groundball from Kelsey Kressler to score Delaney Morgan from third in the bottom of the seventh to win game two of the doubleheader 3-2 against Saint Leo after dropping game one 6-3.

It was Embry-Riddle's second walk-off victory of the season. The first included a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh versus Nova Southeastern on February 25.

GAME 1 | Saint Leo - 6, No. 21 Embry-Riddle - 3
The two squads combined for one hit and five strikeouts through the second inning before the Lions put together a five-run top of the third when all nine batters in the lineup came to the dish. Five hits, including a solo home run, put the Eagles down 5-0 early on.

Saint Leo threatened to increase its lead in the fourth by loading the bases with one out, but starting pitcher Mallory Kinahan used a strikeout and fielder's choice to get out of the jam.

Then in the bottom of the fifth, Embry-Riddle strung together a series of hits to eat into the deficit. Singles from Isabelle Bonn and Savannah Brockenbrough, and an error on a ground ball by Lauren Latoria, put an Eagle on every base with two outs. RBI base hits by Mahaliyah Sandridge and ReAnne Drayton, as well as a miscue by the shortstop, scored three to make it a 5-3 ballgame.

Unfortunately, the Lions added a run to their score in the sixth while Embry-Riddle was unable to put another batter on base.

Brockenbrough was the only Eagle to record multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a run.

Kinahan (7-8) received the loss after allowing six runs over six innings pitched. She also picked up five strikeouts. Morgan came in to pitch in the seventh inning, retiring all three batters faced.

GAME 2 | Saint Leo - 2, No. 21 Embry-Riddle - 3
As has been the trend all series, Saint Leo struck early with a run in the second due to an Embry-Riddle error. The abnormality came in the bottom of the second when the Eagles took their first lead of the weekend.

A bobbled groundball by the Lions' shortstop put the leadoff batter, Maggie Scott, on first. Two outs later, Latoria singled to right and advanced to second on the throw to put two in scoring position. Kressler's double cleared the bases to lift Embry-Riddle ahead 2-1. The Eagle defense stranded the tying run on third in the next frame and retired the side in innings four and five to keep their advantage in the run column. However, Saint Leo tied it in the sixth on an RBI single to left.

After Embry-Riddle failed to score in the sixth, the Blue and Gold would have to walk it off in order to salvage the series with a win in the final game, and that's exactly what the Eagles did. in the seventh, Morgan reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on Latoria's base knock, and moved to third after a wild pitch. Kressler then grounded a pitch to third baseman. Morgan bounced in place, waiting to see what the fielder would do. Once she saw the ball go to first, the freshman sped toward home and slid in just ahead of the throw to win the game.

Both Johnson and Latoria went 2-for-3 while Kressler knocked in all three of Embry-Riddle's runs.

Kelsi Collins (17-6) picked up her SSC-best 17th win by limiting the Lions to a pair of runs on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts over seven innings.

Embry-Riddle plays its final six games of the season on the road, beginning with a three-game series against Florida Southern. The trio of contests starts with a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 27 at 5 p.m.
Embry-Riddle softball's series against Saint Leo is presented by Culvers.
