LAKELAND, Fla. – The fourth-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team rode the momentum of a doubles sweep to a 5-2 win over No. 28 Florida Southern, Saturday at the Moccasins Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
Alexis Guedy and
Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo got the scoring started with a 6-2 win over Brian Pham and Matteo Feggi at No. 3 doubles. The victory preceded Michele Iftime and
Lukas Schneider's doubles-clinching win at No. 3 and
Juan Ortiz Couder and
Luke Paschal teamed up for a 7-6 (4) win against Oscar Sohl and Erik Nordblom to complete the sweep.
ERAU's first singles point came on court six where
Fernando Alonso downed Feggi 6-2, 6-1.
The Mocs picked up their first point of the day when Chris Fok Kow topped Iftimie 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 to make the team score 2-1.
The match at No. 1 singles pitted third-ranked Ortiz Couder against No. 54 Valentin Herweck. Ortiz Couder easily won the first set and fought off a fierce battle from Hertweck in the second to notch the Eagles' third point with a 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) win.
Playing at the fourth spot, Diaz Rodrigo secured a hard-fought 7-6 (7-5) win in the first set and downed Elliott Altman 6-2 in the second to scoring the clincher for the Blue and Gold.
The Mocs were able to earn another point at the fifth spot, and 15th-ranked Guedy capped the Eagles' scoring with a 6-3, 4-6, 10-1 defeat of Sohl at No. 2
The Eagles are back on the road on Tuesday, traveling to West Palm Beach for a 2 p.m. match against No. 43 Palm Beach Atlantic.
