BOCA RATON, Fla. – The 12th-ranked Embry-Riddle women's lacrosse team got five goals and two assists from
Murphy McDonough, but the Eagles were unable to get by Lynn as they fell to Fighting Knights 16-15 on the road on Saturday. The result was the Eagles' second one-goal loss in as many games as they are now 11-2 overall and 1-2 in the Sunshine State Conference.
Two assists apiece on Saturday helped McDonough and
Anna Maurer vault to the top of the Eagles' single-season assist list. They are currently tied at 28 assists on the year, eclipsing the old mark of 26 set by
Mya Watson in 2018.
ERAU bested Lynn (10-2, 1-1) in every category except on the scoreboard. The Eagles outshot the Fighting Knights 35-22 but struggled to finish with only three of their 12 free position shots finding the mark. ERAU won 22 of the 35 draw controls and were successful on all 12 of their clear attempts.
Lynn got the first goal of the game from Sydney Hill and went on to outscore the Eagles 4-2 in the first quarter.
McDonough recorded the first goal of the second period, but scores by Danielle Farinas and Isabella Clark reclaimed a two-goal advantage (5-3) for Lynn. After Clark's goal at the 9:10 mark, the Eagles scored two of their three free position goals in quick succession and
Alexa Zeruto added two more to help the Eagles overtake Lynn 7-6. The Eagle lead was short-lived, however, as a late goal by Lynn made it 7-7 at the half.
The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair as the teams traded goals throughout the period. With 1:36 left, McDonough scored her third goal of the frame for the third tie of the third, but once again, Lynn found a late goal with seven seconds showing on the clock to take an 11-10 lead into the fourth.
ERAU's
Aliza Garofalo opened the scoring in the fourth, but Lynn followed with back-to-back goals to match their largest lead (13-11) of the game. The margin was still two goals (14-12) in favor of the Fighting Knights with 7:28 remaining, but Garofalo, Ellie Daly and McDonogh accounted for three unanswered goals which put the Eagles back in front 15-14.
The Fighting Knights won the next draw and eventually got the ball to Hill who leveled the score (15-15) with 3:29 left to play. Lynn won the draw again, and this time a Mallory Jarka free position goal gave Lynn the 16-15 edge.
After Jarka's goal, the Eagles won the draw and earned a free position shot of their own, but Lynn goalkeeper Ciara Moorman came up with a big save and Lynn was able to clear the ball out of danger to come away with the win.
The Eagles will return to south Florida on Wednesday to take on Palm Beach Atlantic in another SSC contest. Game time is slated for 6 p.m.
