Softball Ends 2022 Season With Extra-Inning Loss to Rollins in NCAA II South 2 Regional

TAMPA, Fla. – An impressive 2022 campaign came to a close on Friday when the Embry-Riddle softball was knocked out of the NCAA II South 2 Regional with a 5-1 loss to Rollins (32-11) in a nine-inning affair. The Eagles finished with a 28-18 record and 19-11 in Sunshine State Conference play.

Continuing her dominance from Thursday, starting pitcher Kelsi Collins was called on again to lead the Eagles in the circle. She shoved through the first six innings, holding Rollins scoreless with four hits.

While Collins and the Embry-Riddle defense stood strong, the offense went to work in the second inning, starting with a single from Isabelle Bonn. Savannah Brockenbrough stepped into the batter's box and grounded a ball to third. Fortunately, the Tars' third baseman misplayed it, allowing Bonn to slide in and score from first.

The innings flew by as the Eagles continued to halt every scoring threat from Rollins. However, the Tars tied the game in the top of the seventh when a batter reached base on a two-out error and stole second. The next hitter put a ball in play, Allowing the Tar on second to touch home ahead of a throw to the plate.

Tied at 1-1, the game went to extra innings. In the top of the eighth, two Eagle miscues put the first two Rollins batters on second and third, but the Eagles didn't back down. Collins recorded a strikeout a few minutes later and then got two Tars to ground out to end the inning. Karina Ortiz-Munoz made a spectacular grab on a grounder and lunged to first base for the final out.

Unfortunately, Rollins scored four times in the ninth on four singles and an error. While the Eagles did load the bases in the bottom half of the inning, the deficit was too large to overcome.

Collins (20-10) pitched another gem, picking up no earned runs yet again while allowing nine hits and striking out four.

Both Lia Johnson and Maggie Scott picked up a pair of hits in their final game as Eagles.

Despite the result, the program made history on multiple occasions throughout the year. The Eagles achieved their highest-ever national ranking (18th), recorded a single-game program-best three triples against Eckerd, and also matched the program record for most hits (18) and home runs (3) in a contest against the Tritons.

Scott added to her already decorated resume by claiming the most career appearances (203), starts (202), and stolen bases (88). During the final game of the year, Johnson snatched the single-season stolen base record from Scott with her 32nd swiped bag. She ended the season with 33.

Now the Blue and Gold heads into the offseason with the goal of coming back stronger in 2023.
