DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - The Embry-Riddle baseball team celebrated eight seniors on Sunday prior to its series opener against Barry, and three of those seniors drove in all five Eagle runs in their 5-4 win over the Bucs on Senior Day. The Eagles (22-25, 10-18 SSC) broke a 4-4 tie in the eighth when
Max Law collected his second RBI of the game with a base hit to score
Elias Campbell from second before
Joe Balsam faced little trouble in the ninth, securing his 11th save of the year. The Bucs (18-29, 9-19 SSC) were held to just four hits on the day, but five Eagle errors allowed two unearned runs to score, making things interesting late for the Blue and Gold.
Garrett Goodall made the final start of his ERAU career, pitching well enough to earn the victory over six-plus innings, but a couple defensive miscues allowed the Bucs to tie the game in the seventh and the senior from Nanaimo, British Columbia did not factor into the decision.
Barry scored an unearned run in the first to take an early lead, but the Eagles were able to answer in the second when
Daniel Trillo was hit by a Mike Reagan pitch with the bases loaded, tying the game at 1-1 before fellow senior
Andrew Martinez brought in two more Eagle runs with a base hit to left, giving ERAU a 3-1 lead.
The Bucs halved their deficit in the third on a RBI groundout, but Goodall kept the Eagles in front over the next several innings, cruising through six and his offense added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Law collected his first RBI of the night on a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt, scoring
Garrett Bogart from third and pushing the advantage to 4-2.
Goodall got into a bit of trouble in the seventh, and was relieved by
Garner Spoljaric with runners on the corners and no outs. The Bucs would go on to score both runners, one via an error, tying the game at 4-4 before Spoljaric sent the game to the bottom of the seventh with a couple of lineouts to center and second base, respectively.
After nothing doing in the bottom of the seventh,
Zach Coldsnow started the eighth with a single to right, and his pinch runner,
Elias Campbell, was moved to second on a sac bunt from Bogart. With two outs, Law stepped to the plate and took a 1-0 pitch through the left side of the infield for a base hit. An aggressive send from Head Coach
Randy Stegall at third paid off for the Blue and Gold as Campbell was able to slide under the tag of the Barry catcher at the dish, giving ERAU a 5-4 lead.
Balsam quickly retired the first two Barry batters in the ninth, but the Eagles' fifth error of the contest kept the game alive and put the potential tying run on base before Balsam got a harmless pop up in foul territory to end the game in ERAU's favor.
Martinez and Law both drove in two runs, with Trillo collecting the other RBI.
Kevin Vittoria and Coldsnow both finished with a pair of hits. Spoljaric (4-3) got the win in two innings of relief, and Balsam's 11th save of the year put him into a tie for third in the ERAU single-season record book.
Payton Rice, J.C Carrell,
Justus Burke, Trillo, Law, Spoljaric, Martinez, Goodall were all honored prior to Sunday's game.
The final two games of the 2022 season are slated for a 1:30 p.m. start tomorrow, Monday, April 9.
