DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - A late offensive output and a spectacular pitching performance highlighted the Embry-Riddle baseball team's doubleheader sweep on Monday afternoon at Sliwa Stadium. The Eagles (24-25, 12-18 SSC) completed a series sweep of Barry (18-31, 9-21 SSC) in both teams' season finales, 8-3 and 4-2, following a 5-4 win in Sunday's opener. The sweep marked the first Sunshine State Conference sweep for the Blue and Gold in 2022, as they split 10 SSC series this season.
Game 1 - ERAU 8, BU 3
The Eagles scored the final six runs of the game, three each in the seventh and eighth, to clinch the series victory over the Bucs. The Eagles got a quality start from
Kelsey Ward and exploded for six extra-base hits in their last two at-bats, including three triples in the seventh inning before
Casey Keller,
Joe Balsam and
Conner Dunnam locked things down for a five-run win.
The Bucs' first run was their only run for a long while against Ward. It came in the first on a wild pitch, but the hosts were able to tie things quickly in the home-half of the inning when
Josh Reynolds singled in
Daniel Trillo after a leadoff double from the senior.
Embry-Riddle took a 2-1 lead when Reynolds brought in
Timo Aracena from third base in the third inning. Aracena was hit by a pitch before moving to second on a single from Trillo and then third on a ground out from
Andrew Martinez.
Ward kept the visitors off-balance for most of the game, but ERAU couldn't add to its lead and the Bucs finally were able to break through in the sixth with a two-out double that scored two runners who had reached via walks, going in front 3-2.
The Bucs went quietly in the bottom of the sixth, and
Casey Keller worked around a leadoff walk in the seventh to send the game to the last of the seventh with a 3-2 score.
Garrett Bogart got the Eagle extra-base fest started with a triple to left center, scoring when
AJ Marinello doubled in the next at-bat, tying the game at 3-3.
Kevin Vittoria moved Marinello to third with a sacrifice bunt before
Max Law gave the Eagles the lead with a sac fly. Aracena and Trillo then hit back-to-back triples to add another ERAU run and a 5-3 advantage.
Keller got two quick outs in the eighth, but a single and walk led to Balsam coming in to get out of the jam. Balsam threw one pitch and got a pop up to short that ended the threat and sent the Eagles back to the dugout.
Embry-Riddle put the game away in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three more runs, one on another Marinello double, and two on a Vittoria double down the right field line.
Leading 8-3, Dunnam went through the first three Barry batters he faced in the ninth quickly, giving the Eagles the win.
Keller (4-4) got the win in 1.2 innings of relief, while Reynolds, Marinello, and Vittoria all recorded two RBIs.
Game 2 - ERAU 4, BU 2
The season and series finale was all about
John Barone. The sophomore right-hander took a no-hitter into the seventh and gave the Eagles seven shutout innings as they scored all they would need in the first inning via a two-out three-run double from Bogart.
Barone retired the side quickly in the first and with the bases loaded in the home-half of the inning Bogart doubled down the left field line, scoring all three Eagles on the bases for a 3-0 lead.
Barone worked effortlessly through the first two innings, but walked the bases loaded in the third before getting a ground out to keep the shutout alive.
Embry-Riddle couldn't do much against the Buc pitching staff after the first, but Barone and the ERAU defense was enough, cruising through six with a three-run lead.
After Barone got the first out in the seventh, Stephen Torres broke up the no-hitter with an infield single, and a fielding error by the Eagles put two Barry players on with onw out. Barone ended his outing with two straight ground balls to third, keeping the Eagles up 3-0.
Karsun Barrett relieved Barone to begin the eighth inning, but was chased from the game after one run scored with two outs, and the Bucs had runners on the corners.
Garner Spoljaric entered, and despite a wild pitch that brought in the second Barry run of the contest, got a ground ball to end the inning.
Bogart collected an infield hit in the last of the eighth, scoring Reynolds from third and adding an important insurance run for the hosts as they led 4-2 heading to the ninth.
J.C. Carrell, pitching in his final collegiate game, worked around a one-out single by retiring the Bucs in the ninth, earning the first save of his career.
Barone (3-2) went seven innings, allowing just one hit with no runs. Martinez and Bogart both finished with two hits, while Bogart drove in all four ERAU runs.
