Men’s Soccer Ties Tars 2-2

WINTER PARK, Fla. - Extreme heat changed to heavy rain as the Embry-Riddle men's soccer team (0-1-1) and Rollins (1-0-1) fought through severe weather conditions to a 2-2 tie at the Barker Family Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The two squads played a conservative first half combining for four shots and no goals before tallying 21 shots and four scores in the final 45 minutes.

After Thomas Loesel recorded a career-high eight saves in the season-opening match on Thursday, the sophomore keeper continued to stay busy in the net on Sunday. His first shot faced was a liner curving toward the left post that he snatched out of the air in the 18th minute.

The Eagles' first prime scoring opportunity came in the 27th minute on a free kick. Jano Baxmann sailed the ball into the box. Yali Shiray raced toward the pass and slid with the hope of tapping the ball with his toe over the line, but it was just out of reach.

Another scoring chance arose with 10 minutes left in the first half when Eden Bokobza was fouled a few feet outside the penalty area. Sandro Henning took the set piece and smoked a bouncing shot to the bottom right corner of the goal, but it was saved.

Rollins broke the tie in the 56th minute on a shot to the bottom left corner that was just out of Loesel's reach.

Embry-Riddle was inches away from finding an equalizer three minutes later when Noah Sims crossed the ball in to Henning, who headed it to the top shelf, but it was eventually grabbed by the Tars' goaltender.

Fortunately, the Eagles knotted the match up in the 61st minute. Baxmann aired the corner kick to the 6-foot-2 Bokobza who used his head to smash the ball through the top left corner of the goal for his first collegiate score.

Ten more minutes ticked off the clock before Embry-Riddle took the lead thanks to a successful penalty kick by Henning.

Rollins threatened with a rocket of the shot in the 79th minute that curled from right to left and hit off the top of the crossbar to allow the Eagles to keep the 2-1 advantage.

However, the Tars tied it at 2-2 on a header from point blank range with eight minutes to go.

Bokobza and Henning each scored for Embry-Riddle while Baxmann picked up an assist. Additionally, Henning led the Eagles in shots (4) and shots on goal (3). Starting goalie Loesel collected four saves.

Embry-Riddle's home opener is scheduled for Wednesday, August 31. The Eagles will host Flagler at the ERAU Soccer Stadium at 7 p.m.
