Men's Soccer Shuts Out Hurricanes in Home Opener

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Eden Bokobza used his second goal in as many matches to give the Embry-Riddle men's soccer team its second home-opening win in as many years. The sophomore's score in the 24th minute was the lone goal in the contest as the Eagles (1-1-1) earned their first victory of the young 2022 slate by downing undefeated Georgia Southwestern State (3-1-0) 1-0 at the ERAU Soccer Stadium on Saturday night.

Thomas Loesel got the nod in the net once again for Embry-Riddle, and he made a massive stop early on in the 23rd minute. A hurricane received a pass from about 15 feet away from the goal and tried to hastily chip it over the Eagle keeper. Loesel stretched his arms up in mere moments to knock the up-close shot over the net.

Under two minutes later, the Blue and Gold handed GSW its first deficit of the season when Bokobza trapped a long throw-in inside the penalty box. The striker was closely guarded by two defenders, but managed to create some space by dribbling toward the middle of the field. Bokobza then spun and swiped his left leg through the air to send a powerful shot into the left side of the net.

In the 28th minute, Loesel made another magnificent save on another top-shelf shot. A corner kick allowed GSW to bunch up inside the box. Multiple hurricanes headed the ball after the cross in before one member of the opposition used his forehead to send a high-arcing shot toward the net. Loesel leaped up into the air, stretched his right arm out, and once again pushed another shot above the crossbar.

Jano Baxmann attempted to double Embry-Riddle's lead in the 40th minute when he sent a line-drive shot toward the Hurricane keeper. Heavy topspin made the ball dive right before reaching the goalie, but the shot was saved.

Once the second half began, GSW became more aggressive with its attacks. For the third time, Loesel stopped a header from inside the box in the 69th minute to preserve the lead.

Four ticks on the clock later, the Hurricanes were inches away from an equalizer as a shot was smoked just above the crossbar.

The Eagles executed flawlessly on defense, especially in the later stage of the match as Embry-Riddle held GSW to just three shots over the final 20 minutes, none of which were on goal. Accurate passing and aggressive defending allowed the Eagles to put the match away for their first win of the year.

Three members of the Blue and Gold (Baxmann, Amit Libgot, and Tom Shepherd) led the squad in shots with a pair each while Baxmann and Bokobza recorded the only shots on goal. Loesel earned his first clean sheet of his collegiate career by accumulating four saves.

Embry-Riddle hits the road again for a match with Stetson at the Hatter's Athletic Training Center on Tuesday, Sept. 6. Play is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
