SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Embry-Riddle volleyball team notched its second Sunshine State Conference win of the season with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-18) defeat of Saint Leo (5-5, 1-1), Saturday afternoon at the Marion Bowman Activities Center. The win moves the Eagles to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the SSC.
The Eagles hit .342 as a team for the match and were led by
Cameron Gilleland who posted a .471 attacking percentage with nine kills, four digs, three service aces and two block assists.
The first set was close to start with neither team gaining more than a one-point advantage through the first 24 points of the frame. With the set tied at 12-12, the Lions enjoyed a 3-0 spurt which gave them a 15-12 lead, but a 9-1 Eagle run put ERAU ahead 23-17. The Lions managed to close the gap to three, but a kill and an ace by Gilleland secured the 25-20 win in the first.
A .524 attacking percentage and just one attacking error helped the Eagles dominate the Lions in set two. The Lions were within three points (13-10), but after an SLU service error sent
Sierra Scanlan to the service line, the Blue and Gold scored six unanswered to widen the gap to 19-10. The Lions managed just three more points in the set and the Eagles raced to a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-13 win.
The Eagles played solid defense in the third set, registering six blocks and forcing 10 attacking errors by the Lions. Despite their hitting woes, the Lions enjoyed a 7-0 run early in the frame, but the Eagles answered by outscoring SLU 13-2 on the way to a 25-18 win in the third.
Next up for the Eagles is a Sept. 16 SSC match against Palm Beach Atlantic. That match, slated for 7 p.m., will see ERAU playing within the friendly confines of the ICI Center for the first time this season.
