DAYTONA BEACH, Florida - 650 runners are set to partake in the 19th annual Embry-Riddle Cross Country Classic this Saturday on Embry-Riddle's campus. The event, which is one of the premier cross country meets in the state of Florida, will serve as Embry-Riddle's first home meet of the 2022 fall season, the Sunshine State Conference Championship (Nov. 5) being the other. 18 collegiate teams and 13 high school squads are slated to compete on Saturday.
The first-ever ERAU home meet was held in 2003. The Embry-Riddle men have won 16 of the previous 18 titles, with the women claiming nine crowns. The Blue and Gold men will be looking for their fifth consecutive team championship with the women hoping to return to the top of the team podium after finishing second last season. The course features numerous types of terrain, including athletic fields, grass hills and mulch trails, which make it one of the most challenging courses in the state of Florida.
In addition to Embry-Riddle, the collegiate field will include SSC foes Nova Southeastern, Palm Beach Atlantic, and Tampa as the teams get a taste of the course in advance of the SSC Championship later this fall. NCAA I members Bethune-Cookman, Florida A&M, Seton Hall, and Jacksonville will also be competing on Saturday.
Seven Volusia County schools will also compete in the 13-team high school field, including Atlantic, Father Lopez, Mainland, Pine Ridge, Riverbend Academy, Seabreeze, and Warner Christian.
The day's events begin at 7:20 a.m. with the collegiate men's race, followed by the women's collegiate race at 7:50 a.m. The high school girls (8:15 a.m.), high school boys (8:40 a.m.), junior varsity girls (9:05 a.m.) and junior varsity boys (9:30 a.m.) races round out the morning.
