Women's Soccer Ties Eckerd, 1-1

Autumn Sander

SAINT PETERSBURG, Fla. - The second ranked Embry-Riddle women's soccer team earned its second draw of the 2022 season on Saturday with a 1-1 tie of Eckerd at Johnson Field. With the draw, the Eagles move to 7-0-2 overall and 2-0-2 in the Sunshine State Conference while the Tritons go to 4-3-1 on the year and 1-2-1 in league play.

The Eagles and the Tritons both showed a good amount of possession in the first couple minutes of play. Just six minutes in, the Eagles fired a shot on Triton netminder Zoe Brasher, but Brasher was able to come up with the save. Shortly after, junior Marie Myhrvold Seim sent a great ball across the Triton's 18. In the end, she was unable to pick out an Eagle teammate. Minutes later, freshman Ria Vlachos shot the ball over the bar for the Eagles, almost giving the Blue & Gold a 1-0 lead.

Just 12 minutes into the second half, the Tritons were awarded a free kick. The free kick was taken a little before the halfway line in the Trition's half. Defender Aisling Spillane serviced the ball into the Eagle box and found junior Hajar Benjoud who was able to turn and find the back of the net, giving the Tritons a 1-0 lead.

Time looked to be running down for the Blue & Gold. With 12 minutes left in the match, freshman Julia Adeback was awarded a free kick. Adeback shot on target, but Brasher was able to come up with the save. Later, the Eagles were awarded back to back corner kicks and were unable to convert, giving the girls a sense of urgency to level the score. In the 84th minute of play, freshman Thea Nyberg was given a free kick and arguably the Eagle's last chance of the game. Nyberg delivered a fantastic service into the Trition box, and junior Adrianna Ordonez Lizarraga was able to pick her head up and find the back of the net, knotting the game at 1-1.

Both teams combined for a total of 22 shots on goal, 14 for the Eagles and eight for the Tritons. By the end of 90 minutes, the score remained tied 1-1.

The Eagles will look to stay unbeaten in their second away game of the season on Wednesday, September 28 against Flagler at Saints Field in St. Augustine, Fla.
