Volleyball Breaks Out Brooms Against Falcons, Wolves in South Region Crossover

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle volleyball team shrugged off a three-match losing streak on Friday by sweeping Montevallo and West Georgia to begin the South Region Crossover.

Isabella Rujano took charge offensively, racking up 25 kills and a hit percentage above .400 in each of the two matches.

MATCH 1 | Embry-Riddle - 3, Montevallo - 0

Montevallo (8-13, 6-4 Gulf South Conference) looked to have the momentum early on by snatching three of the first four points, but the Eagles quickly turned the tide by using a 14-3 run to lead 15-6. Shortly after, the Falcons claimed six straight points with three aces to narrow the Blue and Gold's lead to four points (17-13). Later in the set with ERAU up three at 18-15, the Eagles stepped on the gas to close the first set by earning seven of the final nine points partly thanks to two solo stuffs by Dana Gibbons to win 25-17.

Yet another 3-1 set start by Montevallo occurred in the second set. With the score at 7-6, three Falcon miscues allowed Embry-Riddle to score four straight and lead 10-7. The advantage slowly grew before the Eagles capped off the second set on an 8-2 run to claim it 25-15.

The third set was the tightest of the bunch. Both squads went back and forth to start, but ERAU strung together four straight points on back-to-back Devyn Petrowski aces to lead 7-3. Montevallo quickly responded with a 5-0 spurt to go up 9-8. Again, the two sides traded blows, but Embry-Riddle was able to squeak ahead by two points at 15-13. The Falcons rattled off five points in a row once again, which put the Eagles down 18-15. Fortunately, ERAU was able to battle back and tie the set at 24-24 before kills from Rujano and Jaden McBride secured the 26-24 set win and the sweep.

Hunter Ackermann was the top attacker with 12 kills followed by Rujano, who had 11. McBride's seven kills were just enough to move her into eighth on the program's all-time kills list with 1,052. Grace Datil received 20 assists to pair with Petrowski's 15, Gabriela Pagan added 16 digs, and Gibbons rejected four attacks.

Overall, the Eagle offense performed much better this time around, hitting .290 as a team and holding the Falcons to .098. Additionally, ERAU easily won the blocking battle 7-4.

The win kept the Eagles undefeated against Montevallo, holding a perfect 4-0 record in the all-time series.

MATCH 2 | Embry-Riddle - 3, West Georgia - 0

A trio of Rujano kills and a pair of Pagan aces helped ignite a 6-1 run early on in set one to push ERAU (14-6, 6-4 Sunshine State Conference) up 7-2. West Georgia (11-9, 5-4 GSC) was relentless in its pursuit, cutting that lead down until the score was even at 14-14. However, the Eagles closed strong thanks to Cameron Gilleland's four kills in five rallies to win 25-20.

Set two saw the Wolves get a quick 3-1 start, but ERAU had no trouble climbing back to tie the set at five points each. A 5-0 spurt aided by consecutive aces by Gibbons gave the Eagles a decent amount of cushion at 13-8, but the Wolves rallied back with seven straight points and were eventually within two points of claiming the set at 23-21. A block and back-to-back kills by Gilleland flipped the set around and gave ERAU a set point opportunity. From that point, the Blue and Gold staved off a pair of UWG set points and completed the comeback with two Haley Manjack blocks to take the set 28-26.

Embry-Riddle rode that momentum into the third set with a 4-0 start to take control. Later on, a 5-0 run increased the lead up to 9-3 followed by a 6-0 streak soon after, and it appeared like the Eagles would run away in the third set up 15-5 and later 23-10. However, putting the Wolves away proved difficult. UWG took eight of the ensuing nine points to close the gap to 24-18, but Rujano finally ended the match with a kill to secure the Ealges' second sweep of the day.

Rujano and Gilleland were very efficient in the match, with the former leading the team in kills with 14 on a .524 hit percentage and the latter tallying a season-high 12 kills and a .550 hit percentage. Petrowski (17 assists) and Datil (16 assists) shared setting duties, Pagan earned 14 digs, and Gibbons and Manjack each came away with a trio of blocks.

The Eagles outhit the Wolves .274 to .141 to remain undefeated against UWG in the fifth installment of the all-time series, four of which were sweeps.

The South Region Crossover concludes tomorrow for the Eagles when they play Alabama-Huntsville at 12:15 p.m.
