Volleyball Finishes South Region Crossover Undefeated With 3-1 Win Over Chargers

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle volleyball team wrapped up a perfect South Region Crossover on Saturday afternoon with a four-set win against Alabama-Huntsville. It was a pivotal victory for the Eagles (15-6, 6-4 Sunshine State Conference) that served as a nice resume booster for the postseason as UAH (12-7, 8-2 Gulf South Conference) entered second in the GSC standings. The win pushed Embry-Riddle ahead 2-1 in the all-time series.

It figured to be a difficult battle at the net for the Eagles as Alabama-Huntsville came in with the most blocks per set (2.3) in the GSC and a low opponent hitting percentage of .150. However, ERAU was able to hit.238 as a team and limit the Chargers to just seven blocks compared to the Eagles' eight.

The Chargers were in command to start, taking the first four points. Though the Eagles did battle back to make the score 5-3, all three points were due to UAH errors. Thankfully, the offense quickly warmed up, and Embry-Riddle went on a 9-1 run to take a 12-7 lead into a Chargers' timeout with back-to-back Jaden McBride aces. Eventually, the Blue and Gold's lead was trimmed to two points at 14-12, but that was as close as the Chargers would get as the Eagles went on to take set one 25-20.

Again, UAH set the tone at the beginning, going up 3-0 to start set two. Sadly, the Eagles' deficit grew to 8-2 before three consecutive kills by McBride gave the team some life. However, Alabama-Huntsville continued to surge ahead with a pair of four-point spurts to take control at 23-11. ERAU never gave up, though, and claimed eight of the next nine points and fought off four set points before the Chargers sealed it with a score of 25-19.

This time it was the Eagles who were on top early with a 3-0 lead at the beginning of set three. Four consecutive points from UAH evened the score at nine points each, but ERAU led the rest of the way thanks to a 13-2 streak that allowed the Eagles to double up the Chargers 22-11 and later claim the set 25-14.

Set four was neck and neck until the score was tied 9-9 when the Blue and Gold shot ahead with a four-point run before the Chargers answered with a 4-0 run of their own. A pair of McBride kills then fueled a five-point streak to send ERAU ahead 17-13. A few points later, Dana Gibbons used two kills to lead the Eagles with yet another four-point spurt for a sizable 21-15 advantage that held up until the end. ERAU won the set 25-21.

McBride returned to her usual elite form with a team-high 14 kills and a .300 hit percentage to go along with eight digs, a career-best five aces, and three blocks. Cameron Gilleland registered her first double-double of the year with 11 kills and digs each. Devyn Petrowski and Grace Datil each notched 21 assists, Gabriela Pagan set a personal best in digs with 20, and Isabella Rujano led in blocks with four alongside 11 kills.

After nearly a month-long road trip, the Eagles return home on Friday, Oct. 27 to battle Nova Southeastern at 7 p.m. during Dig Pink night.
