Volleyball Hangs on to Take Down RV Nova Southeastern 3-1

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle volleyball team exacted revenge on RV Nova Southeastern with a 3-1 win over the Sharks on Friday during Dig Pink Night inside the ICI Center. Both squads met earlier this year in Fort Lauderdale on Sept. 23 when NSU downed ERAU 3-0.

The Sharks (14-7, 7-5 Sunshine State Conference) entered as one of the best attacking teams in the SSC with a .242 hit percentage, third highest in the league. However, the Eagles (16-6, 7-4 SSC) held them to .134 in the match.

Embry-Riddle raced out to a 4-0 start, and that grew to a six point advantage at 8-2 thanks to three straight Eagle blocks. ERAU pushed the lead to double digits (19-9) with seven points, three of which were kills by Cameron Gilleland, in an eight point span. ERAU ended the set with a 6-1 spurt to win 25-11. Everything came together for the Eagles as they hit .407 in the set and held the Sharks to a -.050 hit percentage.

Seven consecutive points once again had the Blue and Gold up big early on in set two with a 9-4 score. Fast forward to a 16-11 lead, and it seemed as though the Eagles were going to go up two sets to none. However, NSU mounted a massive comeback by scoring 10 straight points and 14 of the last 16 to swipe set two from ERAU and tie the match.

Back-to-back Gilliland kills helped Embry-Riddle answer the Sharks' 2-0 start to set three. Shortly after, Devyn Petrowski used two straight aces to fuel a 4-0 run that pushed ERAU up 8-5. NSU answered with three straight points to tie it, and the squads went back and forth until another four-point spurt sent the Eagles up 15-12, this time with a pair of aces from Gilleland.

With the lead at two points at 16-14, Jaden McBride registered two kills and an ace to help Embry-Riddle outscore Nova Southeastern 7-1 over the next eight rallies for a comfortable 23-15 lead. The Sharks gave the Eagles a scare by claiming the next four points, but Embry-Riddle closed it out to win 25-20.

Set four was another fast and furious start by the home team. After dropping two of the first three points, ERAU scored six straight and held on to the lead the rest of the way to win the set 25-22 and the match 3-1.

Both Mcbride (15 kills, 16 digs) and Gilleland (12 kills, 15 digs) earned double-doubles with the former setting a personal best with six blocks. Grace Datil was credited with a team-high 22 assists with Petrowski following with 17. Gabriela Pagan added 15 digs, and Dana Gibbons picked up a career-high eight blocks.

Embry-Riddle has little time to rest before returning to the court on Saturday as the Eagles host Palm Beach Atlantic at 4 p.m.
