Volleyball Rolls Over Barry 3-0

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle volleyball team made quick work of RV Barry on Friday night, sweeping the Buccaneers 3-0 to remain second in the Sunshine State Conference standings. The defense performed well, holding Barry to a sub-.100 hit percentage in each of the first two sets with seven blocks in the match.

It's the sixth-straight sweep in the all-time series, and the win improves the Eagles' record to 5-10 against the Buccaneers. Embry-Riddle has won three of the last five.

ERAU (12-3, 6-1 SSC) was in top form early on, racing out to a 7-2 lead to force a Buccaneer timeout after a 5-0 run. Barry (4-10, 1-7 SSC) crept back to within two points, but the Eagles pressed on by scoring seven unanswered points partly thanks to Haley Manjack's involvement in three blocks. However, the Buccaneers answered with five straight points of their own and continued to eat into ERAU's lead until the score was 18-16 in favor of the visitors.

Though Barry did get within one point at 19-18, the Eagles held on to their lead the rest of the way to win set one 25-21. It was an impressive first set defensively as the Blue and Gold held the Buccaneers to a flat .000 hit percentage with five blocks, four of which included Manjack.

Barry had the hot hand to start set two by taking the opening four tallies, but the Eagles turned the tables by taking the next five and and seven of the next eight with help from three Jaden McBride kills. Again, the Buccaneers got as close as one point away, but ERAU kept its distance and maintained a lead.

With the Eagles up 15-13, Embry-Riddle raddled off nine points in a row to blast ahead 24-13 thanks to superior serving from Tamzen Wilson, who registered three aces in that span. Shortly after, the Eagles took the set 25-15.

ERAU was looking to secure the sweep in set three by claiming the first four points. Barry closed the gap to 7-5 before the Eagles doubled up the Buccaneers' score 14-7. Fast forward and the Blue and Gold had five chances to grab the match point with the score sitting at 24-19, and the Eagles needed all five chances. Barry took the next four scores to cut the deficit to one point, but Isabella Rujano spiked the ball so hard that the back-row Buccaneer defender was unable to handle the attack, and ERAU won set three 25-23.

McBride was the top attacker with 14 kills while Rujano was close behind with 13. Grace Datil received her fifth double-double of the season thanks to team highs in assists (30) and digs (13). Wilson added 10 digs, and Manjack picked up six total blocks.

The Eagles remain in South Florida for a match at Lynn on Saturday at 4 p.m.
