Volleyball Struggles Offensively Without McBride in 3-0 Loss to Lynn

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle volleyball team had a difficult time attacking in a 3-0 loss to Lynn on Saturday, playing without the team's top outside hitter Jaden McBride. The Eagles (12-4, 6-2 Sunshine State Conference) hit .116 as a team compared to .264 for the Fighting Knights (12-4, 6-2 SSC).

Isabella Rujano began the match with a pair of kills to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage, but Lynn took the next four points and six of the next seven to snatch the lead 6-3. The deficit continued to grow until ERAU was down by five at 11-6, but the team turned things around at that point. For every point the Fighting Knights scored, Embry-Riddle earned two until the Eagles came back to tie the set 14-14. However, Lynn retook control with a five-point spurt to put the Blue and Gold behind 19-14, and eventually the Fighting Knights ran away with the set 25-17.

After hitting just .192 in set one, the Eagles came out firing in set two, successfully converting on five of their 10 attempts, four of which were from Rujano, to grab an early 7-2 lead. Sadly, the advantage continued to shrink throughout the course of the set until Lynn used a 5-0 run to put ERAU behind 17-15. Though the Blue and Gold did attempt to put together a late-set comeback by scoring three straight, partly due to back-to-back Dana Gibbons blocks, to get within two points at 23-21, the Eagles were unable to completely erase the deficit and dropped set two 25-21.

Set three saw ERAU take the initial point, but the Fighting Knights rattled off four consecutive tallies and six of the next seven to put the Eagles in a 6-2 hole. Embry-Riddle was able to climb back ahead 10-9 with a 3-0 scoring streak that was started with a kill by Cameron Gilleland, who returned to the court for the first time since the season-opening match. The two squads went back and forth until the set was tied at 17-17 when Lynn took six of the next seven to lead 23-18 and later claim the set 25-20.

Rujano filled in as the team's primary attacking option quite nicely, registering a career high 17 kills thanks to a .359 hit percentage and eight digs. Tamzen Wilson and Gabriela Pagan tied for the team lead in digs with 10, Grace Datil accumulated the most assists (15) and Dana Gibbons was the top blocker with five total stops.

The lengthy road trip continues for ERAU as the Eagles travel to face Florida Southern on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
