Petrowski Joins 1,000 Assist Club in Volleyball’s 3-1 Win Over Barry

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle volleyball team got back to its winning ways on Saturday afternoon as the Eagles defeated Barry 3-1. Embry-Riddle (21-7, 12-5 Sunshine State Conference) also beat the Buccaneers (9-17, 3-14 SSC) on the road earlier this year on Oct. 6, making it the third time ever ERAU swept the season series.

It was a special outing for setter Devyn Petrowski as her 24 assists, which tied her single-match season best, were enough to push the senior over the 1,000 career assist mark, becoming just the 10th Eagle ever to reach that milestone.

The Blue and Gold outhit Barry .282 to .174 in the match. ERAU really laid the hammer down in the third set by recording a .560 hit percentage with no attacking errors.

Set one was even early on with Barry edging slightly ahead 10-8 when Embry-Riddle took control with a 5-1 run that included back-to-back kills by Jaden McBride. Though the Buccaneers did reclaim the lead at 16-15, the Eagles completely overwhelmed the opposition from that point on by claiming 10 of the final 11 points led by Cameron Gilleland's three kills. Embry-Riddle handily won set one 25-17.

Barry swiped the momentum right back at the beginning of set two with a 6-1 spurt. However, the Eagles quickly answered with a pair of kills from both McBride and Isabella Rujano to help cut the deficit to 7-6. The Buccaneers increased the separation between themselves and the Eagles with three- and four-point scoring streaks to launch ahead 16-9. Embry-Riddle did score four unanswered points to trim that disadvantage down to three points at 18-15, but that was as close as the home team could get as Barry took the set 25-19.

The Blue and Gold responded by grabbing a quick 4-1 lead in set three. From there, an 8-1 run helped balloon the lead to 15-6, and the margin continued to increase throughout the set until the Eagles reached the 25th point while holding Barry to just 11 points in the set.

Embry-Riddle never trailed in set four. A pair of Grace Datil aces had the Eagles off on the right foot and out to a 3-0 lead. Barry slowly chipped away until the set was tied 10-10, but a trio of Buccaneer attacking errors caused ERAU to leap ahead by four at 14-10. Yet again, Barry rallied to even the score, this time at 19-19. Both squads traded blows, but with both teams at 23 points, Gilleland and Kailey Hrbek each recorded a successful spike to squeeze out a 25-23 set win and claim the match.

Both Gilleland and McBride accumulated 15 kills and 12 digs while Rujano added 11 kills. Datil chipped in 21 assists, Gabriela Pagan led in digs with 18, and Dana Gibbons was the top blocker with five rejections.

Embry-Riddle's homestand continues with a match on Tuesday, Nov. 14 against Rollins at 7 p.m.
