Women’s Basketball Overwhelms Gyrenes 99-52

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle women's basketball team continued its strong start to the season with a 99-52 win over Ave Maria on Sunday afternoon. The two former TSC (The Sun Conference) foes reunited for the first time since 2015. Embry-Riddle (4-0) now leads the all-time series 3-1 and is 3-0 inside the ICI Center against the Gyrenes (4-3) after the win.

ERAU made 43 percent of its shots in the match compared to just 31 percent for AMU. The Eagles also were successful on 45 percent of their 3-point attempts and limited the Gyrenes to 15 percent beyond the arc. Perhaps the most impressive stat was how efficient the Eagles were at the charity stripe, knocking down 14 of their 15 free throws (93%). The Blue and Gold controlled the boards, out-rebounding Ave Maria 48-36. Also of note, Embry-Riddle manufactured a season-high 15 steals and three blocks and turned the ball over a season-low eight times.

The Eagles started the game cold by missing their first five shots. This slump allowed the Gyrenes to take a 7-4 lead just three minutes in, but back-to-back deep shots from Kailey Turpening and Eva Zaragoza turned the deficit into a three point lead, and a jumper by Keturah Balabyekkubo completed the 5-0 run. Another five-shot slump allowed Ave Maria to get within one point at 12-11 with three minutes to go in the quarter, but the Eagles settled in defensively and caused the Gyrenes to go scoreless over a seven minute stretch with 11 missed shots in a row. A pair of layups from Mary Lengemann helped the home team end the quarter on a 9-0 run to lead 22-11.

That run continued into the second quarter as Madyson Jean-Louis drained a 3-pointer and a layup to aid the Eagles in scoring 11 unanswered points to begin the period. Ave Maria finally ended its scoring drought four minutes into the quarter. With ERAU up 33-15 halfway through, the Eagles went on a 12-0 spurt from shots made by five different members of the Blue and Gold to triple the Gyrenes' score 45-15 with 3:21 left before the end of the half. Lengemann used a last-second layup to send the Eagles into the break up 49-22.

The Eagles hit their first two shots in the third with a shot from downtown by Jean-Louis and a lay-in from Balabyekkubo to jump ahead 54-22. From there, the two teams traded buckets until ERAU hit its last five shots of the quarter, two of which came from Zaragoza in the final minute, to take a 37 point advantage (77-40) into the final quarter.

Between the end of the third quarter and the start of the fourth, Embry-Riddle drained five straight 3-pointers. Stephanie Ramsey shot lights-out off the bench by making her first three attempts from beyond the arc all within the opening two minutes of the period. Just like in the second quarter, the Eagles' defense stifled Ave Maria and forced the Gyrenes to miss their first 10 shots of the quarter. This helped balloon ERAU's lead to 51 points (94-43), and the Eagles cruised from there on out.

Zaragoza led the Eagles offensively with a season high 11 points. Jean-Louis added 10, and Kyra Haan tallied a career-best 10 points and four rebounds. Seven other Eagles also set single-game personal highs. Ramsey and Laurie Satchell's nine points were single-game career highs as were Satchell's five rebounds and two assists. Amou Ring matched her career best in rebounds (5) and picked up her first ever block. Lengemann (4) and Chandler Brooks (2) earned career highs in steals. Alyssa Brasko blocked a career high two shots and tallied her first ever steal, and Anye Staton recorded her first assist and steal of the year. Additionally, Turpening's nine points were her most of the season, and she notched her first steal of 2023.

The Eagles continue their four-game homestand with the upcoming Bahama House Shootout. Embry-Riddle is scheduled to play Flagler at 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 24.
