Volleyball Continues to Roll with 3-1 Win Against Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle volleyball team's winning streak continued to grow on Saturday as the Eagles defeated Saint Leo 3-1 for their eighth victory in a row. Strong defensive play was the key for the Blue and Gold. ERAU (20-6, 11-4 Sunshine State Conference) registered twice as many blocks as the Lions (12-6) to hold Saint Leo (9-15, 4-11 SSC) to a .136 hit percentage.

The win moved the Eagles to 10-6 all-time against the Lions, and ERAU has now won six in a row versus Saint Leo.

All the momentum was on ERAU's side to begin the match as the Eagles jumped out to a 14-5 lead in set one with a 4-0 and 5-0 run. The cushion grew to 11 when the Blue and Gold doubled up Saint Leo's score at 22-11, holding the Lions to a flat .000 hit percentage at that point. SLU attempted to form a comeback despite the lengthy deficit. The Lions took six of the next seven points to get within six at 23-17, but ERAU was able to close out the set and win 25-18.

Embry-Riddle again grabbed an early lead in set two, sitting up 5-3. Halfway through, SLU went on a 5-1 spurt to claim a four-point lead at 15-11. The Eagles rallied with a 5-1 run of their own to tie the score 16-16. However, Saint Leo regrouped and outscored ERAU 9-5 to take the second set 25-21.

Set three was closely contested. For the most part, neither squad could gain more than a couple points of separation. The Eagles did score six times in a seven-rally span to go from down 5-3 to up 9-6, but that lead didn't last long as the two teams continued to go back and forth. A pair of Jaden McBride kills helped ERAU climb ahead by four at 18-14, and it appeared as though the Eagles were cruising to another set win. However, SLU went on a 5-1 stretch and fended off two set points to get within one at 24-23, but Cameron Gilleland sealed the set with a kill for the 25-23 win.

What began as a promising 6-4 lead for ERAU in set four turned into a five-point deficit as the Lions then scored seven unanswered points. With Saint Leo still ahead 15-10, Embry-Riddle scored eight straight points to go up 18-15. Saint Leo battled back to even the score at 20-20, but two Lion miscues allowed the Blue and Gold to take the next three points and earn some breathing room at 23-20. Again, SLU denied two set points, but the Eagles were finally able to put Saint Leo down for good as Gilleland picked up another set-ending kill to take set four 25-23 and the match.

Isabella Rujano totaled 14 kills while Gilleland chipped in 13 kills along with eight digs and four blocks. Grace Datil accumulated 23 assists, and Devyn Petrowski earned just her second double-double of the year with 17 assists and 10 digs. Gabriela Pagan tallied a team-high 15 digs, and Dana Gibbons and Kailey Hrbek both recorded four blocks each.

The Eagles start a five-match homestand on Thursday, Nov. 9 when ERAU hosts Lynn for a Block Party at 7 p.m.
