Volleyball Falls Just Short to Lynn in Five Sets

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Embry-Riddle volleyball team kicked off a five-match homestand with a nail-biting 3-2 loss to Lynn on Thursday night inside the ICI Center. It was just the fourth time this season the Eagles engaged in a five-set affair and the first occasion since Sept. 15. The loss ended ERAU's eight-match win streak.

Despite the result, the Eagles did manage to outhit the Fighting Knights .212 to .201 and led in the blocking category 11-8. Embry-Riddle also tallied more aces than Lynn by a mark of 7-6.

The match began on a positive note as ERAU (20-7, 11-5 Sunshine State Conference) scored the opening four points. The Eagles managed to hang on to that lead until the Fighting Knights (21-7, 12-5 SSC) went on a 5-1 run to push ERAU behind 10-8. Both squads traded blows when the Blue and Gold strung together five straight points to reclaim the lead 18-16. From there, the two teams rattled off a trio of points each and then went back and forth until a Hunter Ackermann kill dealt the final blow in the first set for a 25-23 win.

Set two saw a similar hot start for the home team. The first three rallies ended in favor of the Eagles, but once again, Lynn fought back with four consecutive points to lead 9-7. Three straight Fighting Knight miscues brought ERAU back ahead 10-9, but that lead was short lived when Lynn claimed five of the next six points. From there, the Eagles were unable to get any closer, and the Fighting Knights closed the set on a 6-1 run to win it 25-17.

Lynn had the hot hand to start set three, leading 4-2 and increasing its advantage until the score was 13-8. Thankfully, Embry-Riddle strung together a five-point rally shortly after, partly due to three kills from Cameron Gilleland, to even the set at 16-16. However, the Fighting Knights took control from that point on to win set three 25-22 and go up two sets to one.

An early 5-3 Lynn lead was quickly erased with kills from four different Eagles to help ERAU take seven of the next nine points in set four. Later on, Isabella Rujano pieced together three kills to aid Embry-Riddle in a 5-1 spurt to increase its lead to 17-12. The Eagles were then able to comfortably cruise to a 25-17 set win.

In the pivotal fifth set, Lynn scored three straight to force a Blue and Gold timeout at 7-4. The pause in play was just what the Eagles needed as Jaden McBride followed with a kill and an ace to help lead ERAU back to tie the set at 7-7. Gilleland struck twice, Devyn Petrowski earned a kill herself, and Grace Datil served an ace to vault the Eagles ahead 11-9, but Lynn then outscored Embry-Riddle 6-2 to steal the set 15-13 and the match.

Both Gilleland (17 kills, 18 digs) and McBride (16 kills, 19 digs) recorded double-doubles, both setting season-bests in digs while Gilleland also notched a new 2023 high in kills. Rujano picked up 12 kills and four blocks. Datil and Petrowski split the assists 24 and 23. Gabriela Pagan registered a career-best 28 digs, and Kailey Hrbek led the squad in blocks with seven.

The homestand continues on Saturday when the Eagles host Barry at 4 p.m.
