BOCA RATON, Florida - The Embry-Riddle men's basketball team had little trouble with Lynn on Wednesday evening, coming away from the de Hoernle Center with a blowout win, 79-53. The Eagles improved to 15-6 overall, and stayed in second in the Sunshine State Conference at 8-6 in league play, while the Fighting Knights dipped to 4-15 and 2-12.
It was a two-headed monster for the visitors on Wednesday as Malcolm Whitlow and Chris Murray each finished with 20-plus points, marking the second time this season the pair had done so. Whitlow scored 16 of his game-high 23 points in the first 20 minutes, while Murray finished with 21 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
Whitlow got things started for the Eagles with a step back jumper just 30 seconds into the game, and the visitors never looked back, springing out to a 7-0 lead before the Fighting Knights could score.
Whitlow's triple at the 12:55 mark put the Eagles up 13-10, and a few minutes later, the Blue and Gold reeled off a 7-1 run, taking a four-point lead out to 29-19 when Jared Berry nailed a triple in transition, causing Lynn to burn a timeout.
The timeout didn't help much. Embry-Riddle, behind Whitlow's hot shooting, increased its lead out to 16 on a couple of Murray free throws (39-23), and ultimately took a 41-26 lead into the break after a Danny Sully dunk with just seconds to go before the half ended.
Whitlow and Murray combined to score 28 points, outscoring the hosts between them.
The Eagles finished the Fighting Knights off early in the second, pushing the cushion out to 18 nearly immediately, and then to 20 when Michael McCalister made a fast break layup at the 16:18 mark.
The Blue and Gold kept up the pressure both on the offensive and defensive ends, taking a 64-38 lead on a Jon Alessandro trey halfway through the half, and the Eagle bench took care of things the rest of the way.
It was a tremendous defensive effort for the Eagles as they held Lynn to just 36% shooting from the field, while shooting 51% themselves.
Whitlow's 10th game scoring at least 20 points this season puts him 14th in the single-season record book for the Eagles. McCalister joined Whitlow and Murray in double-figures with 11 points to go along with five rebounds. As a team, ERAU out rebounded the Knights 42-24, and owned the paint to the tune of a 36-20 advantage.
ERAU stays on the road to take on Saint Leo on Saturday, Feb. 4. Tip is set for 6 p.m. in Saint Leo.
