LAKELAND, Fla. – The 10th-ranked Embry-Riddle men's tennis team fell to NAIA No. 9 Southeastern 4-3 in both teams' season opener at the Fire's Beerman Family Tennis Complex on Wednesday. The NAIA No. 9 Fire won the doubles point and three of six singles matches to capture their first win of the season.
The first point of the day went to the Eagles' second flight tandem of
Fernando Alonso and
Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo as the duo topped Federico Barbon and Victor De Olivera 6-4. At the top spot, Christian Garay and Diego Menedez Vina topped
Alexis Guedy and
Michele Iftimie 6-2, and Guido Luna and Enrique Martinez held of
Lukas Schneider and
Luke Paschal 7-6 (8-6) to secure the doubles point.
Alonso picked up the Eagles' first singles point of the day, downing de Olivera 6-3 in the first set and leading 4-1 in the second before SEU's No. 2 player was forced to retire due to injury. Menedez put the Fire ahead with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ifitmie at the third spot and Martinez made it 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over
Yoav Nir on court six.
No. 32 Guedy recorded the Eagles' second singles point with a three-set (6-3, 1-6, 6-3) win over Garay on court one, but Luna battled Schneider to a 7-5, 7-6 (4) victory at No. 5 to seal the win for the Fire.
The Eagles' next match will be their Sunshine State Conference opener. They will travel to Miami Shores to take on top-ranked Barry at noon on Saturday.
