MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Tenth-ranked Embry-Riddle fell to No. 1 Barry 4-0 at the Buccaneer Tennis Center in both teams' Sunshine State Conference opener on Friday. The loss drops the Eagles to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the league, while Barry improves to 1-0.
The Bucs earned wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take the doubles point. At No. 2 Tim Buttner and David Rieme topped
Fernando Alonso and
Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo 6-3, while the third flight tandem of Alessandro Giuliatto and Adam Lynch bested
Lukas Schneider and
Luke Paschal by the same score.
The Bucs earned the three singles points they needed on courts two, three and four. Their first point came on court two where Alejandro Ibanez Gallego downed Alonso 6-2, 6-3. Alessio Demichelis held off Diaz Rodrigo 7-5 in the first set and earned the second singles point by taking the second 6-2.
The clinching point came in the form of a hard-fought, three-setter as Giuliato outlasted
Michele Iftimie 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
The Eagles' next match will be on Feb. 9 when they travel to No. 3 Saint Leo. Start time is slated for 3 p.m.
