Softball’s Walk-Off Win Against No. 4 Auburn Montgomery Highlights Final Day of Panther Invitational

LONGWOOD, Fla. - For just the second time in program history, the Embry-Riddle softball team defeated a top-5 opponent as the Eagles defeated No. 4 Auburn Montgomery 5-4 in walk-off fashion during the final day of the Panther Invitational on Saturday. ERAU also faced West Florida, but lost 7-1.

The Eagles (4-2) leave Longwood with wins over two opponents receiving votes in the NFCA preseason poll, but still have a tough road ahead with 12 of the next 14 games against programs with at least two or more votes in the national poll.

GAME 1 | Embry-Riddle - 5, No. 4 Auburn Montgomery - 4

ERAU exacted revenge on AUM (3-4) after it dropped a contest to the Warhawks on Friday. The Eagles proved they could start as well as they could finish when the Blue and Gold erupted for four runs in the opening frame. Mahaliyah Sandridge led off with a double and later scored on a Delaney Morgan single. Following a walk to Karina Ortiz-Munoz, Emma Wood sent the team's first ball over the outfield fence this season to push the ERAU lead up to 4-0.

In the third, Ortiz-Munoz took matters into her own hands with an unassisted double play. The junior snatched a line drive out of the air and stepped on first to retire the baserunner. However, Auburn Montgomery did get a single run on the board in the inning.

After the Warhawks tacked on another run in the fifth, Ortiz-Munoz flashed the leather again when she picked a fast-bouncing ground ball for the final out to leave two runners on base.

The Eagle lead continued to dwindle, getting reduced to only one run after the sixth. In the bottom half of the inning, Morgan and Ortiz-Munoz attempted to start a rally with base knocks for each to begin the frame. Wood was then walked to load the bases with no outs, but Embry-Riddle couldn't earn any insurance.

AUM managed to tie the contest in the seventh but fortunately didn't do any more damage than that as they left the go-ahead run on third. Raissa Bianco got the bottom half going with a single to left and an advancement to second on a throwing error. A flyout by Katriana Bain allowed Bianco to tag up and go to third, which put the game-winning run 60 feet away with one out. Sandridge was next up to the plate, and she launched a pitch out to left field. Bianco acted as if she was going to tag up and go home, forcing a throw to the plate from the fielder. Bianco halted her momentum with the intention of returning to the third-base bag, but the throw went over the catcher to the backstop, allowing Bianco to jog to the plate and secure the upset victory.

Once again, Sandradge and Morgan recorded two hits each, although the latter did so in one fewer at-bat (3). Also of note, Wood ended the game 1-for-3 with a run and three RBI. Mallory Kinahan started the game in the circle for the Eagles. She threw six innings and allowed two earned runs on nine hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Wood (1-0) entered the game in the seventh in relief of Kinahan, and ended up with the win after an inning of work.

GAME 2 | Embry-Riddle - 1, West Florida - 7

Unfortunately for the Eagles, the bats went cold in the day's second game. West Florida (4-4) jumped out to a 5-0 advantage over Embry-Riddle by the end of the third inning.

The early hole was difficult to overcome, but the Eagles made an attempt to eat into the deficit in the fourth when Sandridge and Wood began the inning with a double and a single. Wood broke for second to attract the attention of the Argonaut defense, which was successful as the catcher threw across the diamond in an attempt to throw Wood out. The throw down allowed Sandridge to sprint home well ahead of any play at the plate to make the score 5-1.

That would be the only offensive production ERAU would get the rest of the day, although the defense still made impressive plays. In center field, Morgan laid out for a shallow fly ball and robbed West Florida of a hit in the fifth. The bottom half of the inning saw Bain record her first hit as a member of the Blue and Gold - a deep double to left field that bounced off the wall.

The Argonauts added another two runs in the top of the seventh,  which was the last of the scoring.

Six different Eagles notched a hit. Morgan went 1-for-3 to push her hitting streak to six contests. On the basepaths, Wood swiped two bags to go along with her 1-for-3 line. Shelby Morse (0-2) started the game in the circle and lasted six innings, giving up four earned runs on seven hits but no walks with three strikeouts. Ava Domenici provided an inning of relief in the seventh.

Sunshine State Conference play already begins next week when the Eagles head to RV Rollins for three games. The series starts on Friday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m.
