Late-Game Hope Turns to Heartbreak in Softball’s 2-1 Loss to Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. - After tying the game in the top of the seventh on a home run by Karina Ortiz-Munoz, the Embry-Riddle softball team dropped its first Sunshine State Conference game of the season 2-1 due to a walk-off double by Rollins in the bottom half of the inning.

The Eagles (4-3, 0-1 SSC) were held to a season-low two hits but used patience at the plate to earn a season-best three walks.

It was a stalemate for the first four and a half innings as both starting pitchers continuously hit their marks. Mallory Kinahan and the Eagle defense limited the Tars (5-3, 1-0 SSC) to a single hit in that timeframe while Rollins did the exact same to Embry-Riddle. Ortiz-Munoz did send a sharply-hit ground ball down the left line for ERAU's first base knock of the game in the fourth, but the Eagles were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

In the bottom of the fifth, three singles loaded the bases for the Tars, and a four-pitch walk gave them the first run of the game. Thankfully, the damage was limited to just one run as Kinahan induced a pop-up to shortstop Mahaliyah Sandridge.

The situation looked bleak, but after witnessing a seventh-inning comeback and walk-off at last weekend's Panther Invitational, the Eagles should never be counted out in the final frame. As was the case on Friday night when Ortiz-Munoz led off the seventh with a blast to straightaway center to tie the game, her first home run of the season and second of her career.

Sadly, Rollins had its own seventh-inning surge when the Tars used a one-out single and a walk-off RBI double to defeat Embry-Riddle.

Ortiz-Munoz was the only Eagle to record a hit on the night. The junior went a perfect 2-for-2 with a run and RBI. Kinahan lasted 6.1 innings in the circle and allowed just one run on four hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Shelby Morse (0-3) received the loss after taking over in the seventh. She gave up one run on two hits.

The two squads meet again tomorrow at the Rollins Softball Stadium for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Since the two programs first met in 2015, Embry-Riddle has swept every road doubleheader against the Tars.
