INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A fiercely-contested seventh place match saw the fourth-ranked Flagler (2-2) men's tennis team edge Embry-Riddle (0-5) 4-3 on the final day of the ITA/NCAA II National Indoor Championships on Sunday.
The first win of the day went to the Embry-Riddle pair of
Alexis Guedy and
Michele Iftimie as they took down Nikita Tatyanin and Jagger Ong-Patzwald 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. The Saints were able to secure the doubles point, however, as Phillip Lemken and Pavlos Parson downed
Lukas Schneider and
Luke Paschal 6-2 on court three and Jacopo Denitto and Petr Cervinka bested
Fernando Alonso and
Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo 6-3 at No. 2.
Guedy evened the team score at 1-1 with his 6-3, 6-0 defeat of Tatyanin at the top spot, but the Saints used Cervinka's 6-0, 1-6, 6-4 win over Diaz Rodrigo at No. 4 and Denitto's 6-4, 7-5 win over Alonso at No. 2 to gain a 3-1 advantage.
Playing at the third position, Iftimie got a point back for the Blue and Gold with his three-set (6-2, 3-6, 6-1) victory over Pavlos. On court six, Paschal downed Lemken in two sets (7-5, 6-3) to level the team score at 3-3.
The match at the fifth spot saw Ong-Patzwald win his first set against Schneider 6-2. The Embry-Riddle sophomore battle back to take the second set 6-4, but Ong-Patzwald was able to secure the win for his team by taking the third set 6-1.
The Eagles' will play their first home contest of the season on Saturday. They will host Sunshine State Conference foe Eckerd at 2 p.m. at the Crotty Tennis Complex.
